Michael Brewer: Player of the Week

Charlie Brewer quarterbacked the Lubbock High School football team in Lubbock, Texas to a 13-0 4A state championship in 1951.

He went to the University of Texas and started at QB there from 1953- 1955. Do I remember him? Nah, I wasn’t even born yet.

Not the best time for the Longhorns, right before the time of Darrell Royal and they were struggling a bit. Brewer graduated from UT and became a banker in the Dallas, Texas area.

About 25 years later, Charlie’s son, Robert, was a walk-on QB at Texas. In 1980, Robert Brewer was a back up to former Parade All-American QB Donnie Little. Little was a prize winning recruit from Dickinson, Texas, but he never lived up to the hype and UT had recruited another QB out of Fort Stockton, Texas named Rick McIvor.

McIvor was as West Texas as they come but he had one of the stronger arms I have ever seen. He would hit a streaking receiver 60 yards or more  down field on one play  and then miss a wide open guy 10 yards away the next pass. He was extremely inconsistent. The stories of Rick McIvor’s arm strength were out of control and a job for the modern day television show, Myth Busters. I am not even sure it’s physically possible for a human being to ‘throw the field’.

Texas coach Fred Akers moved Donnie Little to WR and the QB job was given to McIvor. After leading the team to #1 status, McIvor was benched after an extremely lackluster performance in a blow out los to Arkansas.

Brewer took the QB job from McIvor and almost led them back into the national title picture with a big win over Alabama in the 1981 season Cotton Bowl. McIvor was the ideal QB physically at 6-4,220 and with an absolute cannon for an arm. Robert Brewer, on the other hand, was too small and too slow to be a major college QB. Sound familiar?

Brewer ran the show in 1982 and the Texas offense that season was a well oiled machine, thanks to Robert Brewer and his talents and leadership.

Brewer applied for another year and was denied by the other Southwest Conference Schools leaving Texas with Rick McIvor going into the 1983 season. Rick McIvor and Rob Moerschell from Dallas Highland Park, both played QB for Texas in 1983 and Robert Brewer would later marry the sister of teammate Moerschell.

The 1983 Texas defense was spectacular but the offense was a sputtering clunker and they lost 10-9 in the Cotton Bowl to Georgia losing a shot at the national championship.

Charlie Brewer’s grandson, and Robert Brewer’s son, Michael Brewer was like his grandfather in that he was a starting QB on a Texas High School 4A state championship. He led the Lake Travis High School football team to the state championship. Unlike his father, Robert, Michael was recruited by some bigger schools. He was even recruited a little by his obvious favorite school, Texas, but they told him they wanted to gray shirt him. Michael Brewer was the QB at Lake Travis immediately following highly recruited 5 star Garrett Gilbert.

When a player gray shirts, he basically sits out of football for a year and then comes in and is on scholarship. The school is asking a player to put off his career a year.

Michael wanted to play right away so he signed with Texas Tech.

Michael played QB at Texas Tech, but he was also injured some. Last year, Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury named a different QB his starter, Davis Webb.

Michael Brewer was set to graduate and did actually graduate this past May.

He wanted to transfer back to his dream school, the University of Texas. But, Texas Tech would not grant his release to Texas so Michael would have to go somewhere else.

Michael Brewer has the same problem his father had, he’s a bit undersized. The rosters have him at 6-1,185 but I believe that is a bit of a stretch.

Brewer decided to transfer to Virginia Tech and will be eligible immediately. Last year’s QB for the Hokies was 6-6, 250 Logan Thomas and he was drafted  by the Arizona Cardinals, so there is a job opening. If that is the type of QB that the Virginia Tech staff is looking for then, I am not sure that Frank Beamer will give him a proper shot at QB. But, I do believe that Michael Brewer could be the type of guy that gets Virginia Tech back in the limelight. Logan Thomas with all of his physical gifts, could not seemingly lead the Hokies to the next level, maybe the grandson of Charlie Brewer can.

I do feel for the kid. He wanted to play for Texas, but got the shaft the first time by Texas and then he got the shaft the second time around by Texas Tech.

But, he could do a lot worse in his life than Blacksburg, Virginia and the Virginia Tech Hokies.

He would have easily been the starter at Texas in 2013 and 2014 and who knows what kind of career he would have had as a Texas Longhorn.

Great story about a great guy Charlie Brewer and the legacy he has established. Little wonder because his father, Western Union manager in Lubbock was a grand gentleman. I served in the US Army with Charlie in 1957 and he was an inspiration to be around.
