1967 Parade All American Team

Parade All American Team was always a fun thing to read when you are a recruiting junkie.

Like women and the old cigarette ads, ‘we’ve come a long way, baby’.

Where are the defensive players? Get a load of those sizes, too, while you are at it.

1st Team:

E: Bruce Kordic – Collinwood HS Cleveland, Oh 6-5, 220: I believe he signed with Penn State even though Ohio State had a banner year on the recruiting trail and he was from Ohio. I found a Bruce Kordic on the Penn State letterman’s listing from that era.

T: Steve Sikora – Upper Arlington HS Columbus, Oh 6-0, 220: Was a member of a very successful high school team at Upper Arlington that was able to beat Massillon Washington 4 straight times which was no easy task. I’ve no idea where he played college football if he even did.

G: Frank Ditta – Walthrip HS Houston, Tx 6-1, 205: Went to the University of Houston and led them in tackles. Sadly, I found out about his whereabouts in an obituary as he had passed away in 2013.

C: John Roatche – Hatbro – Horsham, Hatbro, Pa 6-0. 210: Listed at center, but he averaged 20

tackles a game on defense. I have no idea where he played college football, if at all.

G: Gale Knull – Mont Pleasant HS Schenectady, NY 5-10, 180: These old AA lists are a trip, he was better as a LB and too small for either as a Division 1 player. He went to St Laurence University where he played football, but was a better wrestler and went 53-1.

T: George Trujillo – Jackson, Mi 6-5, 280: Great size for the time, but I find no record of what happened to him.

E: Thomas Gatewood – City College HS Baltimore Md 6-2, 210: Signed with Notre Dame and was their top receiver. Drafted in the 5th round, Gatewood played briefly for the New York Football Giants.

QB: Jimmy Jones – John Harris HS Harrisburg, Pa 6-1, 175: Quarterback for the USC Trojans starting a couple of seasons. After college, he played Canadian football for several reasons mostly because of the nonsense that black guys couldn’t play quarterback at that level and maybe his lack of size.

RB: Robert Paine – St Thomas HS Houston, Tx 6-0, 185: Signed with the state flagship school the University of Texas, but was a backup.

RB: Bobby Valentine – Rippowan HS Stamford, CT 5-10, 190: Valentine went baseball and was

successful as a manager. Some people might argue about his being successful, but he was a manager in the Major Leagues. Which compared to John Doe football fan, is very successful. So there.

RB: Levi Mitchell – Froebel HS Gary, Ind 5-11, 185: Signed with the Iowa Hawkeyes and rushed for 900 yards during his junior season of 1970. Mitchell ran for just under 2,000 yards for his career.

2nd Team:

E: Ken Adams – Kashmere HS Houston, Tx 6-1, 175: Not sure where he played college ball and if he did.

T: Ronnie Carroll – Spring Woods HS Spring Branch, Tx 6-3, 225: Carroll played college football for the Sam Houston State Bearcats and then played a season in the NFL for the Houston Oilers now the Tennessee Titans. He put on a little weight and played at 265.

G: Jim Humbert – Roger Bacon HS Cincinnati, Oh 6-2, 215: Signed with Notre Dame and started at offensive tackle. I am not 100% sure, but he may have married Ara Parseghian’s daughter. She married a Jim Humbert and was of the same age, but there’s 3 guy’s in my city with my name. I cannot confirm without doing more research.

C: Eric Patton – Mater Dei HS Santa Anna, Ca 6-2, 215: Also signed with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and started at linebacker for them. Patton was drafted by the Green Bay Packers but played a couple of seasons in the World Football League for the Southern California Sun. After football,

Patton got into high school coaching and was successful in Orange County.

T: Charles Doe – El Rancho HS Fico Riva, Ca 6-5, 250: Had good size, but not sure where he went.

E: Tom Huiskens – Bay City, Mi 6-2, 190: Signed with the Michigan Wolverines and was a member of head coach Bump Elliott’s last recruiting class. Bump Elliott’s Recruiting Class

He was a career back up that injured his knee in 1970 and had to give up football completely. He was more successful after football.

QB: Jack Mildren – Cooper HS Abilene, Tx 6-1, 190: Maybe the best college player on this list leading Oklahoma in it’s switch to the wishbone offense. One of the very best college quarterbacks in the nation in 1971 and quite the dual-threat quarterback. Was a successful businessman in Oklahoma after giving the NFL a try as a defensive back.

RB: Steve Harrison – St John’s Prep HS Danvers, Ma 5-11, 170: an undersized but speedy tailback that ran for nearly 1,400 yards as a senior in 1967. Harrison was one of the best players ever out of St John’s Prep which is a school that also produced NFL players Brian St Pierre, Rob Konrad and Jonathan Goff. Harrison went on to play college ball at Harvard.

RB: Isaac Brown – Owensboro, Ky 6-0.175: talented running back that lead a great Owensboro High School team. Brown signed with Western Kentucky where he starred and was an 8th round draft pick by the then Boston Patriots. Brown did not make the team but played in Canada in the CFL.

RB: Chuck Mesko – Archbishop Hobart Akron, Oh 6-0, 190: Signed with Penn State. Joe Paterno loved defense, so he moved a lot of his top athletes to defense and Mesko started at DB for the Nittany Lions in the 1971 season.

3rd Team:

E: Rhea Taylor – Central HS Peoria, Ill, 6-5, 210: He went the basketball direction and played for Robert Morris.

T: George Leidal – Tallmadge HS Akron, Oh 6-6, 260: Can’t find his destination.

G: Glen Stovall – Herrington, KS 5-10, 205: Way too small, not sure what happened to him.

C: Scott Hulke – Larkin HS Elgin, Ill 6-4, 210: Hulke was a key member of the last unbeaten Elgin

team. He signed with the Michigan Wolverines where he was a backup.

G: Paul Scallish – Woodward HS Toledo, OH 5-11, 230: All city and All American, but I have no idea where he played college ball. He did pass away in 2009 and obituary just mentioned high school ball.

T: George Bodine – Mt Carmel HS Auburn, NY 6-2, 220: A high school legend at Mt Carmel, Bodine went on to play at Syracuse. He was on the squad, but not a starter.

E: Mike Siani – New Dorp HS Staten Island, NY 6-2, 180: Well, what do you know. If you throw out enough names, one of them is bound to work out. Siani signed with Villanova which seems an odd destination for a Parade All American. But, he was picked in the 1st round of the 1972 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. He was not a sensational NFL player, but he did manage to finish runner up to Franco Harris for NFL Rookie of the Year and he played 9 seasons in the NFL.

QB: Greg Briner – Gardena, Ca 6-0, 185: Player of the year in Southern California for 1967, he signed with USC but injuries and possibly competition from guys like 1st team Parade All American Jimmy Jones kept Briner off the field. He went on to become a college football coach and an offensive coordinator.

RB: Dennis Chadwick – Decatur, Ga 6-3, 185: Chadwick signed with the Tennessee Vols and played some at quarterback in 1971 before switching to tight end for the 1972 season. Dennis followed his older brother Walter Chadwick to Tennessee.

RB: Chuck Roper – Brentwood Mo 6-3, 180: Signed with Missouri and he was a backup in 1969 before becoming the starting quarterback in 1970 and 1971. Parade apparently didn’t research these guys all that well naming him an All American back when he was yet another quarterback.

RB: Mike Deutsch – Shanley HS Fargo ND 6-3, 210: He played for North Dakota and shudder to think, became a football and basketball official along with a business owner in Fargo. How many Mike Deutsch’s can there be and living in Fargo, North Dakota? Deutsch was part of a Shanley High School’s 59 game win streak.

Who picked these lists? Nothing personal to those on the Parade All American team, but some of these guys were just part of great high school football teams.
