Rex Burkhead on the Carry

Living across a street from a football stadium can have it’s ups and downs. While only a high school stadium, it was in an area that loves it’s high school football and it was a larger city and several teams shared the stadium. Every Friday night and then weekends during the playoffs there was a big game across the street. Big games mean noise and lots of traffic.

But, the ups included being able to walk to a game and not have to find parking. Also, on a week night once, the local university, which is one of the tops in the country had band practice on the field. I just opened up the windows and listened. There’s nothing much better than cool autumn air and the sound of football related music going off in the background.

Also among the ups would be during the playoffs since this was a big stadium, the good teams would agree to play there.

I was busy one particular Saturday, but I came home to see that a game was going on across the street. As soon as I got out of the car I could hear the announcer and bands playing.

The announcer said one phrase over and over and over that day and that was ‘Rex Burkhead on the carry’.

It was Plano High School versus Spring Westfield in the third round of the Texas High School Playoffs. Say, or think, what you want about the state of Texas, or it’s high school football, but when it comes playoff time the football gets extremely interesting. Plus, Texans take it very, very seriously.

Rex Burkhead was a junior that year, in 2007, and he led the Plano Wildcats to a 31-19 victory over the Springfield Mustangs. Plano made it all the way to the semi-finals that year before losing to eventual state champion, Euless Trinity, in a close heartbreaker of a game.

Burkhead ran for over 1,700 yards after his senior year in 2008 before signing with the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

The 2009 Nebraska Cornhuskers finished with a 10-4 record with Bo Pelini as head coach. Roy Helu Jr was the starting running back for the Huskers and broke the 1,000 yard barrier. True freshman Burkhead ran for 345 yards as the top back up.

The following year, the Cornhuskers moved to the Big 10 Conference and Rex Burkhead was all alone as the starting running back. He showed his appreciation by running for over 1,350 yards and 15 touchdowns in leading the Huskers to a 9-4 record.

The Huskers coaching staff, Bo Pelini, thanked Burkhead for his great season by moving Ameer

Burkhead finished his career at Nebraska by running for 675 yards at 7 yards per carry compared to Abdullah’s 5.0 per carry.

Rex Burkhead was drafted in the 6th round by the Cincinnati Bengals and spent several years there before signing with the New England Patriots.

With the Patriots, he’s been to two Super Bowls and on February 3rd, 2019 Rex Burkhead on the carry, got his very first Super Bowl ring.

Every time Burkhead carries the football, I am reminded of the time he was a high school kid and the announcer wore out his name on the public address system.

Football, ya gotta love it.
