Best Games of the Week October 11th

There are not as many good games this coming Saturday as there was last Saturday, but it’s still going to be a great weekend with some really good games.

Like always, forget about the wedding you got invited to attend. There’s too many good football games to sit through a boring ole wedding.

Top game this week will be #2 Auburn at #5 Mississippi State.Wow, what a game. Auburn looks to have an unstoppable offense with a great Offensive Line, a very mobile and talented Quarterback, a pair of top Running Backs, and maybe the best Wide Receivers in the country. Mississippi State has one of the nation’s great defenses led by Bernardrick McKinley and Preston Smith among others. The Psycho Defense was solid last week and Linebacker Richie Brown picked off Aggie Quarterback Kenny Hill 3 times.

Auburn defense has improved this season over last, but can they stop maybe the top player in the country in Dak Prescott?

This game could be crazy, but I am picking Auburn to win this game. If the Mississippi State Bulldogs can beat the Auburn Tigers right after beating LSU and Texas A%M then they might should be ranked #1.

Also, # 3 Ole Miss is visiting #12 Texas A%M. Ole Miss has one of the nation’s great defenses, but they may have left it all on the field last week in their monumental upset of Alabama. Texas A%M was also upset and it was not nearly as close as the score indicated.

However, I believe the Aggies bounce back this week and beat the Ole Miss Rebels just because they probably won’t be up for this game. It’s hard to repeat week after week and if the Rebels do then they still have Auburn and Mississippi State coming up among others.

This game could be a wild and exciting one and the Rebels could win if the good Bo Wallace shows up again. But, I am picking the Aggies just because of last week’s results.

This is the highest that the Ole Miss Rebels and the Mississippi State Bulldogs have been ranked at the same time in my lifetime.

This is one crazy year.

Plus, #7 Georgia is at #22 Missouri. This game could be a wild one. Georgia wins it big in Athens, I think. But, it could be a different story in Columbia, Missouri. Missouri will have to stop the leading Heisman candidate, Todd Gurley, obviously. That is usually easier said than done.

The winner of this game becomes the frontrunner and probable winner of the SEC East. Georgia was the favorite going into the season to win that title but has already lost to South Carolina. This game is a do or die situation for the Bulldogs.

People keep counting Missouri out and they keep coming back and I believe they win this game in a mild upset over Georgia. For Georgia to win, I believe that Hutson Mason will have to have the game of his life which probably doesn’t happen.

#18 USC is at #19 Arizona. I would like to point out that I was the only one that had the Arizona Wildcats ranked before the season. The polls now have them at #10. This game should be really entertaining and it will be interesting to see if the Trojan defense can slow down the Wildcats’ offense. The Wildcats are undefeated, but I expect that to end when the USC Trojans come to town on Saturday. The Trojans lost 2 games they should have won including last week’s upset loss to Arizona State on the last play of the game. Nobody still has figured out what happened to USC against Boston College.

If the Wildcats can win this game against a talented Trojan football team, they certainly deserve the #10 ranking.

#21 TCU visiting #9 Baylor. The TCU Horn Frogs upset the Sooners last week and everyone put them in the top 10 but me. Baylor has only played one team of consequence and that may be Texas’ worst team in the last 50 years. If this game was in Fort Worth, I would take the Frogs, but I am taking the Bears in Waco.

#11 Oregon is at #14 UCLA. Both of these teams were picked to do very well this season and both were upset last week by teams they should have beaten. The UCLA Bruins have only looked really good in one game and that was against Arizona State. Oregon looked really good against Michigan State. Both schools have struggled at times this season and both have very highly thought of quarterbacks.

I can’t see either of these teams lose two games in a row, but I am going to have to go with Oregon on this one. It would not surprise me at all if the Bruins stepped up and beat the Ducks at the Rose Bowl.

Duke is at 5-0 Georgia Tech. The Blue Devils are 4-1 with their one loss coming to Miami, who Georgia Tech just beat. The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets have one of the more unique offenses around and it’s hard to prepare for them in a week if they have the right guys in place, which apparently they do.

This game is a toss up, but I am picking Duke to win just because.

#4 Alabama is in the Ozarks facing unranked but should be ranked Arkansas. The Crimson Tide was #1 on my poll for all of one week, but they are still outstanding and should give the Razorback defense fits. The question is, can the Crimson Tide shut down the Pigs’ awesome running game and match up against their huge Offensive Line.

The Razorbacks should lose, but they are absolutely the best 3-3 team in the entire country. This game should be a slug fest with Alabama coming out on top.

LSU is at Florida.  People have written off LSU, but I haven’t. If Miss State is their #3 team and Auburn is their #2 team, then the LSU Tigers may still need to be in their rankings. The Tigers’ quarterback position is a mess and who knows whether true freshman Brandon Harris or sophomore Anthony Jennings will play most against the Gators.

The Florida Gators have plenty of issues of their own. They still have a solid defense, but the quarterback situation is unsettled. True freshman Treon Harris looked really good, but he has been suspended and they are back to Jeff Driskel.

Driskel just seems to be missing something.

I expect the LSU Tigers to come out on top in this one, but it will be a defensive struggle from the opening whistle.

Pathetic Texas is playing #10 Oklahoma. Texas may not win another game in 2014. The only reason this game was mentioned is because of the rich history of the game and often when Texas or

Oklahoma is counted out, they tend to rise up and upset the other one. That’s not going to happen this year because the Texas defense might be much improved but their offense is just inept.  The Sooners were upset last week in Fort Worth and won’t be beat in Dallas this season by Texas. New Texas head coach Charlie Strong has his work cut out for him and he made it harder on himself with his choices on the offensive coaching staff. Texas Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes will be eaten alive by the Sooner pass rush because the Longhorns have one of the worst Offensive Lines in the country.

Washington at Cal both are 4-1.Both of these schools have been fun to follow this season. Cal was 1-11 last year, but they started a true freshman at Quarterback and had brand new head coach Sonny Dykes. This year’s team has been the exact opposite and they could even be 5-0 without the Hail Mary pass by Arizona’s Anu Solomon.

Washington also has a new coach, but has a lot of talent left over from Steve Sarkisian. This game should be a fun game to watch and I think the Washington Huskies beat the Cal Golden Bears just because they have a better defense.

#1 Florida State is facing Syracuse. Syracuse should have a snow ball’s chance in hell in this game, but you never know with the way the Seminoles have been playing. The Noles may be without top Wide Receiver Rashad Greene and top Running Back Karlos Williams but this game should still be a breeze for the nation’s top ranked team.

Syracuse has a fabulous history in football with the likes of Jim Brown, Ernie Davis, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little and so many other greats playing for them. But, it’s been a long time since they have been relevant.

Louisville is at #20 Clemson. Louisville is a surprising 4-1, but Bobby Petrino is an excellent coach in his second go around at this school. Take driving coeds around on his motorcycle away from Petrino and he is still a good coach and he has them playing at a high level already in his first year back.

Clemson is a completely different team now that they start super true freshman Deshaun Watson at Quarterback. Watson was the top ranked dual threat Quarterback in the nation last season and has proven really quickly that he earned the ranking.

Clemson’s defense is tough and it’s front 7 is as good as anyone’s particularly Vic Beasley at Defensive End and Grady Jarrett at Defensive Tackle.

Look for the Clemson Tigers to defend their home turf and knock off ACC newcomer, Louisville. But, this may be a really good and exciting game. Louisville has it’s own highly ranked true freshman Quarterback in Reggie Bonnafon who has been filling in for injured  Will Gardner.

Washington State at Stanford on Friday night. Washington State is only 2-4 on the season but they are one of the most dangerous teams in football and the Nerd Nation will have their hands full on Friday night. Stanford is 3-2 on the season with tough losses to USC and to Notre Dame. The Cardinal could just as easily be 5-0 this year as 3-2. Senior Quarterback Kevin Hogan is an effective Quarterback, the Cardinal should have an equally effective running game to keep WSU Quarterback Connor Halliday off the field and on the sidelines. Stanford always has a tough defense, but stopping the Cougars is a tough task for any defense. Look for Stanford to improve to 4-2 on Friday night.

Penn State at Michigan. This is the worst Michigan team in my lifetime and I am getting a little long on the tooth. I am not sure they win another game this season and it’s going to be an interesting

coaching search. Penn State, on the other hand, has a great coach and he is just now starting to make his presence known with a 4-1 start. The Nittany Lions will do nothing but get better and better as Franklin gets more and more of his players in place. I am hoping that Penn State can keep James Franklin from leaving for the NFL. A 5-1 Penn State just 3 years after one of the biggest scandals in the history of college football is a likely possibility.

It’s going to be a great football weekend.
