3 Games I Don’t Plan on Missing This Weekend

Sometimes early in the season there are a bunch of games featuring good teams against smaller schools and a lot of those games are boring unless you are a true fan of either of the teams. Or, just a football junkie like I am.

This weekend, there will be plenty of games featuring ranked teams and they will be facing bad teams.

But, there will also be at least 3 good games on this weekend and these games I do intend on watching.

Oklahoma at Tennessee – Well, Bob Stoops has done it again. Just like before the Sugar Bowl game against Alabama, Stoops has opened his mouth and angered his opponent. In the Sugar Bowl, the Sooners shocked the Crimson Tide and the rest of the world and upset them in front of God and everybody else.

This year, he has angered Tennessee fans by saying he isn’t impressed with Neyland Stadium. Not that big of a deal to rational people, but football fans can tend to be the opposite of rational.

The Sooners were highly ranked last season after expectations arose from the win over Alabama, and they disappointed. In their third game of the 2014, the Sooners beat the Volunteers pretty easily in Norman. That game was about when the Oklahoma Sooners peaked a year ago and they finished up with an 8-5 record and a very bad ending at the hands of the Clemson Tigers losing to them by 34 points.

It’s a new season, and the Volunteers have improved in leaps and bounds over last season. But, supposedly so has Oklahoma and their new passing offense. The question may be just which team has improved the most. Oklahoma was the better team last year, and they fell off as the season wore on. On the other side, the Vols were bad early and got drastically better.

Joshua Dobbs made a world of difference at the end of last season for Tennessee and this game will be a big test for the Quarterback and his Volunteer teammates.

I picked the Sooners, but I’m not feeling that great about my selection. Both teams need a win here badly if they are going to enter the national picture and have a shot at a playoff. I think the Vols are a year away, but will get there under Butch Jones.

LSU at Mississippi State – The Mississippi State Bulldogs jumped all over the LSU Tigers last year. The LSU fans, that pride themselves in being the best out there, left by the truckload at halftime and just a few people watched LSU mount a beautiful come back and nearly win the game before losing 34-29.

The Bulldogs return star Quarterback Dak Prescott and I blogged about him here:

The Bulldogs are not as strong as they were a season ago, but Prescott does return which should give them a fighting chance at the very least.

Across the sideline, the LSU Tigers return a lot of people including Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette, a strong stable of Running Backs, excellent Wide Receivers and a solid Offensive Line. The Quarterback position, however, remains something of a mystery. Sophomore Brandon Harris has been named the starter after struggling during the early part of his true freshman season at Baton

Rouge. Harris started in their 5th game against Auburn and that version of the Tigers blew out the Louisiana version of the Tigers. After that debacle, Brandon Harris saw little playing time the rest of the season and he didn’t play at all in the team’s last 3 games.

Several experts are picking LSU to make the playoffs this season.

The drawback for LSU in this game is that their game last week was cancelled due to lightening so they don’t have their first game jitters out of the way like Mississippi State does.

I am still going with the Tigers over the Bulldogs, but this should be a great game.

Oregon at Michigan State – I know, I know SEC fans, these schools and these conferences don’t play real football. But, this game still has the potential to be really good. They met up last year in Oregon and the Ducks won it after being behind part of the game.

But, the Oregon Ducks had Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota then and they do not now as he plays for the Tennessee Titans of the NFL.

Transfer Vernon Adams has taken over for Mariota, but that’s still a big loss for any program to absorb. The Ducks still have a lot of weapons on offense. Their defense, on the other hand, did not impress all that much in 2014 and I did not see anything from their first game to indicate that they will be better in 2015.

The Michigan State Spartans return senior Quarterback Connor Cook and a really outstanding

Offensive Line. They lost some play makers at Wide Receiver and at Running Back, but they have some young talent coming up there.

The Spartan defense, unlike recent seasons, was not exceptional last Friday Night against Western Michigan. They’ve slipped slightly since the 2014 season which had dropped off ever so much from the 2013 defense which was one of the nation’s best. Their Defensive Coordinator left to take the head coaching job at Pittsburgh.

If the Spartan defense can slow down the Ducks enough and Connor Cook and his offense can score a few points, it should be a good game for Michigan State.

I think the Spartans should win here, but the ball is shaped funny in football and strange things can happen which is why you need to tune in to this game.

On Thursday Night, check out Western Kentucky hosting Louisiana Tech. There will be fewer commercials to wait through than the over hyped Tom Brady NFL game, which will be preferable.
