Tee Higgins Clemson

There’s little doubt in my mind that Tee Higgins is one of college football’s next big stars. The Clemson coaching staff traveled into the state of Tennessee and surprised some people by stealing Tee Higgins from under the noses of the Tennessee Volunteers. This past season, the Tigers’ crack recruiting staff stole the top player out of Alabama. But in the 2017 class, they not only grabbed Tee Higgins, they also signed Amari Rodgers. They were two of the top five players in Tennessee, and to rub salt in the wound, Rodgers is the son of former Vol quarterback Tee Martin who led them to a national championship in 1998.

Maybe the worst thing for the Volunteers was that Higgins is from the Knoxville area and Rodgers is from the city of Knoxville. Clemson just came in and took some the state’s best talent right out from underneath their noses. That had to hurt. It had to have been about as big of an embarrassment as their recent head football coaching search. In the end, it probably worked out really well for the

Tennessee football program, but it was a three ring circus.

Tee Higgins was a 4 star on ESPN’s list and the 2nd ranked player in his own state. He was also the 2nd ranked wide receiver in the nation on the same ESPN list. Ranked ahead of him at wide receiver was Joseph Lewis from Los Angeles who signed with USC.

Joseph Lewis played sparingly as a true freshman with 4 receptions. Tee Higgins didn’t start, but he caught 17 passes and averaged over 20 yards per reception.

Higgins is either 6’4″ or 6’5″ depending on who you ask, but he’s obviously a tall young receiver. His 40 yard time is listed as about 4.75, but that’s obviously not correct.

Clemson has had some big time receivers in the past 10 years like Mike Williams, Sammy Watkins, DeAndre Hopkins and Martavius Bryant. The coaches seem to think that Tee Higgins could be as good, or better than any of those super stars. Those are big words and it’s going to be a challenge for Tee Higgins to meet expectations.

Even with some receptions as a true freshman, Higgins had something of a coming out party in the Clemson spring game. Hunter Johnson hit him early in the scrimmage and Higgins came down with a spectacular catch. True freshman quarterback Trevor Lawrence also hit him a few times and Higgins made play after play. It was an introduction for Clemson fans to the future with Higgins being thrown to by Trevor Lawrence. That could become one of the more dangerous connections in the country even as soon as 2018.

To take some of the pressure off of Higgins, will be some of the other Clemson receivers and they are very good in their own right. Deon Cain and RayRay McCloud left early for the NFL, but Clemson still has Alabama killer Hunter Renfrow, who led the team in receptions in 2017. The already mentioned and very talented Amari Rodgers had 19 catches as a true freshman and should be ready to move up this season. 6-5, 210 junior receiver Diondre Overton should also be ready to make a move. Trevion Thompson, Cornell Powell and TJ Chase need to step up and produce this year, or they will be passed by freshmen Derion Kendrick and Justyn Ross a couple of highly recruited freshmen. Ross was the best player in the state of Alabama and Clemson stole him from right under the noses of Alabama and Auburn.

True freshman Braden Galloway is listed as a tight end, but he might play wide receiver and he has that large frame that defensive backs have such a struggle with at 6-5, 230.

As far as getting the ball to Higgins and friends, the Tigers return senior quarterback Kelly Bryant.

There’s really no doubt that Bryant is going to start at quarterback in Clemson’s first game. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has already said as much and it’s really not a controversy at this point. However, there will be a quarterback controversy at least at some point during the season. The fans are already screaming for super talented freshman Trevor Lawrence and that’s not going to change. Lawrence might be the best prospect in the history of the game at quarterback and has almost unlimited potential. But, the coaches are going to go with experience and Bryant has a full year under his belt already, while Lawrence has obviously never played a down.

Hunter Lawrence is just going to be too good to keep off the field for very long.

Clemson is going to be a contender yet again for another playoff position and everyone is talking about their defensive line. There’s a good reason for that with the talent that they have returning along their front four.

Not a lot of people are talking about Tee Higgins.

But, they will be by the end of the season.

Tee Higgins has the look of a true star all over him.
