Coaches on the Hot Seat Update

I posted about a month ago about coaches that might be on the hot seat: Trouble

This is an update.

Mike Riley – Nebraska: The Cornhuskers are coming off of a 14-56 beating in front of the home crowd and it was not even that close. Nebraska is currently 3-4 on the season and this is the Huskers we are talking about. Mike Riley is a really nice guy, but the Huskers are fed up with average to bad teams. I would think that Riley will be gone soon and former Nebraska Cornhusker quarterback Scott Frost is hired. Frost is killing it at undefeated UCF.

Bret Bielema – Arkansas: The Razorbacks are a proud program and the fans are fed up with mediocrity. They are currently, 2-4 with both some hard games and some winnable games awaiting. He’s had plenty of time to turn the program around in the eyes of the fans and is likely gone after this season ends.

Butch Jones – Tennessee: People are pretty angry in Knoxville. Sitting at 3-3 with some bad

losses behind them, it’s not looking that great for Jones at the moment. At home, they were crushed by Georgia, 0-41. What’s really bad for Tennessee is Alabama is next on the schedule and that’s a guaranteed loss. Jones has recruited well and he has some talent on the roster, but Vol fans are restless and the fire Butch Jones signs are appearing. Unless there’s a miraculous come back, Jones may be out the door even with some good seasons behind him.

Kevin Sumlin – Texas A%M: After starting the season on the hot seat, it got much worse after losing to the Bruins of UCLA on the last play of the game, the heat got out of control. But, then they won 4 straight games and gave Alabama a much tougher game than anyone else that has taken them on. Then, they beat Florida in Gainesville to improve to 5-2. Sumlin may have saved himself by recent wins and the rest of their schedule is not difficult even with Auburn next. In my opinion, Sumlin has survived.

Rich Rodriguez – Arizona: Rich Rod’s season has gone better than expected and he might have found the guy to save his job in quarterback Khalil Tate. The Wildcats are 4-2 currently and playing really well. With Tate at quarterback, Coach Rodriguez may have saved himself from the chopping block. The defense is even playing better.

Todd Graham – Arizona State: What an amazing upset of top 10 Washington this past weekend for the Sun Devils. Arizona State improved to 3-3 on the season. They still have a long way to go and their defense is still one of the worst in the nation. Even though their defense is near the bottom, they sure played well against Washington. The Sun Devils don’t get the publicity of some teams, but they have a rich football history and losing is not going to cut it.

Gus Malzahn – Auburn: Things looked up for the Tigers before last weekend’s collapse at Baton Rouge. Now, the critics are back out in force. Malzahn has never had a losing season, but at Auburn that’s still not good enough. 7-5, 8-4 records are not going to get it down at Auburn and especially when rival Alabama is having so much success.

Gary Anderson – Oregon State: The first guy fired of the guys on this list. Things just weren’t getting any better for the Beavers. I doubt they will be able to get any big names in Corvallis, but Andersen failed to improve Oregon State at all. Andersen did well at Utah State and at Wisconsin, but it just didn’t work out for him at Oregon State.

Jim Mora – UCLA: Even with quarterback Josh Rosen back, the Bruins are struggling. After coming from behind to beat Texas A%M in game one, the Bruins have stumbled to a 3-3 overall record. The Bruins finished 4-8 last season and with a 3-3 start, it doesn’t look much better for Mora and UCLA. The Bruins don’t like losing to USC.

Kliff Kingsbury – Texas Tech: Kingsbury’s team has played pretty well early in the season posting a 4-2 record and the losses have been competitive. The defense is actually better which isn’t that difficult since they were the worst defense in the nation. They can still score points, and the defense being better can’t hurt. Their schedule is tough, but with a couple of upsets, Kingsbury could be a man about town again.

Barry Odom – Missouri: Former head coach Gary Pinkel spoiled the Tiger fan base and Barry Odom is in some serious trouble. The Tigers won 4 games in his first season as head coach and they are 1-5 this season. It’s not looking good, but maybe he will get another year at least.
