14 Best Wide Receivers in 2014

1. Amari Cooper – Alabama: Many people think Amari Cooper is the best player in the country at any position and I am not one to argue. Actually, I am one to argue, but not about Cooper. This guy is just electric and exciting with the ball in his hands. Cooper had the ball in his hands many times this past season catching an incredible 124 passes for and an even more exceptional 1,727 yards and 16 Touchdowns.

Cooper should be a top 5 draft pick and become an instant factor in the NFL. The 6-1, 210 junior out of Miami, Florida is a tough out for any defense. He’s got excellent speed and hands and all of the intangibles. College football will miss Amari Cooper.

2. Duke Williams – Auburn: My list is composed of the players that I think are the best at their position which doesn’t always translate into stats. Duke Williams is an incredible athlete that comes up with the circus catch time after time. He has that size that the NFL loves in a receiver these days at 6-2, 215 and he has excellent speed and hands. He is still a tad bit raw, but this guy is a game changer, or a play maker if you will. Williams only caught 45 passes for 730 yards and 5 Touchdowns but the Auburn Tigers do not throw the ball all that much with Nick Marshall at Quarterback. It’s not official yet, but D’haquille ‘Duke’ Williams is expected to return for his senior season at Auburn which will be a good thing for him and for the Tigers.

If you have not seen this guy play you have been missing out. Fun player to watch along with teammate Sammie Coates. If he declared for the NFL now, he would be picked. But, to come back and try to have an even better senior season is the smart move for this guy and he may see the ball more next season with Jeremy Johnson at Quarterback. He could and should be a top pick with a huge senior year.

3. Kevin White – West Virginia: Another big play maker at Wide Receiver is Kevin White, the 6-3, 215 Plainfield, New Jersey native is a heartache waiting to happen for opponents.

Hauling in 109 passes this past season, White was obviously the Mountaineer go to guy. His receptions totaled 1,447 yards and 10 Touchdowns. He only caught 35 passes in 2013, so this was a great break out season for White and no better time than your senior season. He has the size, speed and hands to be very desirable to NFL teams.

4. Rashad Greene – Florida State: Greene has been the Florida State Seminoles main receiver target for the last 4 seasons even as a freshman. Greene will be missed in Tallahassee. He doesn’t have ideal size, but possesses everything else a good receiver requires.

Greene caught 99 passes in 2014 totaling 1,365 yards and 7 Touchdowns. For his career at Florida State, he caught 270 passes. Many call him the best Seminole Wide Receiver of all time and if you follow the college football game at all you will know that is a bold statement given Florida State’s history under Bobby Bowden and present day Jimbo Fisher.

The Seminoles lose Greene, Winston, O’Leary and 4 out of 5 Offensive Linemen off of this year’s team. I don’t think they will start next year as anyone’s number 1, but Florida State is Florida State and they always find a way to reload.

5. Vince Mayle – Washington State: I wrote something about Vince Mayle in another post on this blog.

http://collegefootballcrazy.com/nfl-fans-need-to-remember-the-name-vince-mayle/

Vince Mayle is as raw as they come, just playing football for a short time after giving up basketball. But, he is a big body at 6-3, 220 and has really nice speed for his size and the hands. Washington State Wide Receivers are going to naturally put up big numbers because of their offense but never mind that. Mayle can play with the best of them.

He caught 106 passes for 1,483 yards and 9 Touchdowns this season and since he was a senior he will be off to the NFL this year. Supposedly, he runs the 40 in the 4.4s and we shall see at the NFL combine.

6. Sammie Coates – Auburn: Big play Sammie or Super Sammie will work when talking about Auburn’s Sammie Coates. This guy just has that knack for the big play. Like Duke Williams, Sammie Coates is not going to get a lot of media attention because his offense just did not throw the ball as much as some schools. But, Coates averaged 21.79 on his limited touches and scored 4 Touchdowns. He only caught 34 passes as a junior going for 749 yards and 4 Touchdowns. Coates is 6-2, 200 and is a freak of an athlete. Supposedly, he runs the 40 in the 4.3s and benches well over 400 pounds, plus he has a 44 inch vertical. We should find out for sure on that measurements in the next few months as he leaves Auburn for the NFL.

If I am calling the shots on an NFL team, I would have no problem taking Coates with an early pick.

7. Nelson Agholor – USC:  Agholer is another big play guy. Originally from Florida’s bustling city of Tampa, Agholor has opened some eyes on the West Coast catching 104 passes as a junior in 2014. His receptions were good for 1,313 yards and 12 Touchdowns.

Agholor is also a top notch punt returner, taking 4 back for Touchdowns in his 3 seasons at USC. Nelson Agholor has already declared for the NFL. Supposedly, he runs a 4.5 in the 40 but looks to play faster with the pads on. He’s not going to dominate Defensive Backs with his size at 6-1, 190 so he may not be picked as highly as some receivers, but he’s still projected to go fairly high.

8. Ty Montgomery – Stanford: The Cardinal football team has been so good of late that 2014 seemed a bit of a disappointment finishing up at 8-5. Montgomery was injured against California and missed the last 2 games, but still managed to catch 61 passes for 604 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Montgomery is a big guy at 6-2,220 and is supposed to be able to run the 40 yard dash in 4.4 seconds which is moving. He is also an excellent punt and kickoff return man returning 5 for scores during his time playing for Stanford.

Talented guy that will never give an NFL franchise any problems.

9 Jaelen Strong – Arizona State: Strong could easily be higher on this list. The 6-3, 215 junior from Philadelphia, Pensylvania caught 82 passes in 2014 for 1165 yards and 10 Touchdowns. This guy is really explosive and like others could be much higher on this list. He is big, has great hands and excellent speed. He’s definitely a threat to go the distance any time he gets his hands on the ball. Strong is not a one year wonder as he caught 74 passes in 2013 as a sophomore.

His junior year at Arizona State will long be remembered for the ‘Jael Mary’ reception with no time left on the clock at USC to win the game for his Sun Devils when all of the Trojan Defensive Backs were perfectly set up to stop it.

This NFL draft it will be tough to be in the top 5 or 10 group of Wide Receivers picked.

10 Laquan Treadwell – Ole Miss: I really wouldn’t object to any list that had Treadwell in the top 5, because this guy is really good. He’s about 6-2, 230, runs really well is as tough as nails. He did have his body nearly ripped in half against Auburn and the Ole Miss offense was never the same without Treadwell in the lineup.  The video is pretty graphic.

He had 48 catches for 632 yards and 5 Touchdowns before going down.

11. Devin Smith – Ohio State: Smith is a 6-1, 200 big play guy out of Massillon, Ohio. He only had 33 catches on the season but 12 of them went for touchdowns. The most impressive stat involving Devin Smith is 28.21 yards per catch. He’s not going to physically remind  you of Sammie Coates or some other receivers, but he is a Touchdown waiting to happen.

12. Jamison Crowder – Duke: Mr Excitement Jamison Crowder. Crowder won at least one game in his career with his punt returns, but he is a dangerous receiver as well. He’s a little on the smallish side at 5-9, 175, but very quick and explosive. The senior from Monroe, North Carolina caught 85 passes in 2014 which totaled 1,044 yards and 6 Touchdowns. In 2013, Crowder caught 108 passes for 1,360 yards. Over his career at Duke, Crowder caught 283 passes for 3,641 yards and 23 Touchdowns. He also had 4 Touchdowns from returns.

13. Tyler Lockett – Kansas State: Lockett is one of the more exciting players in the country and very similar to Jamison Crowder. Like Crowder, he is smaller and a great receiver and a punt returner extraordinaire. Lockett had 106 catches in 2014 going for 1,515 yards and 11 Touchdowns. Even if Lockett didn’t score on a punt return, he would still thrill with his many moves and his exhilaration with the football in his hands.

14. DeVante Parker – Louisville: Big Wide Receiver at 6-3, 210 and maybe one of the first Wide Receivers taken. He did not have a big senior season, but part of that was due to losing his Quarterback, Tedy Bridgewater, and the coaching changes. He’s still one of the more desirable players at his position by the NFL.

He caught 43 receptions this season totaling 855 yards and 5 Touchdowns. That was after catching 55 as a junior in 2013 and 12 Touchdowns.

Mekale McKay – Cincinnati: 6-6 guys are desirable by NFL clubs.

Tyler Boyd – Pittsburgh: The Panther’s big play man.

Tony Lippett – Michigan State: Big play man for Spartans

William Fuller – Notre Dame: Speed merchant had 15 Touchdowns and should be on my list

De’Runnya Wilson – Miss State: 6-5 former basketball player

Pharoh Cooper – South Carolina: Speedy guy for the Gamecocks is hard to defense.

Rashard Higgins – Colorado State: Big numbers and talent.

Jordan Taylor – Rice: Another tall player with big numbers.
