14 Top Offensive Tackles of 2014

1. Brandon Scherff – Iowa: In my opinion, the best Offensive Tackle in the country. Scherff is a great run blocker, with excellent feet, and he can run pretty well for a man of his size. Offensive Linemen rarely have to run far in a football game, but it is an indication of athletic ability when one can run like a Tight End and Scherff can flat out move for a big man. Brandon Scherff would have been a first round pick last year if he had decided to come out. He is a 6-5, 325 senior from Denison, Iowa. Besides being very athletic, Scherff seems to have a nasty disposition. Talented player and should go in the top 10 in the next draft unless I am completely wrong about him.

2. Andrus Peat – Stanford: Andrus Peat is a 6-7, 315 beast from Chandler, Arizona. The Stanford Cardinal did have a rough season in 2014, and the Offensive Line had to replace 4 starters, but they got better as the season progressed. Peat did get a little roughed up by Nate Orchard of Utah giving up 3 sacks in that game, but he has done nothing but get better and better each year at Stanford. It doesn’t matter for my list sake, but I believe he should be the second Offensive Tackle taken in the next NFL draft only behind Brandon Scherff of Iowa.

3. Cam Erving – Florida State: Cam Erving is a 6-6, 310 Left Tackle from Moultrie, Georgia. He was a former Defensive Tackle that converted to the Offensive Line about 3 years ago and he took to it immediately. Back in the day, Gil Brandt and Tom Landry of the Dallas Cowboys, would draft Defensive Linemen and would convert them to the Offensive Line. Defensive Linemen are generally the better athletes than Offensive Linemen and that worked very well for them back in the day. Similar to the Cam Erving move to Offensive Tackle. Erving is a talented athlete and a very versatile Offensive lineman. He moved to Center during 2014 due to injury to the starter being injured and the Florida State Offensive Line instantly got better. Looks like a guy that could play any of the Offensive Line positions.

4. Cedric Ogbuehi – Texas A%M: The NFL draft has been kind to Aggie Left Tackles of late, but I don’t believe that Ogbuehi is as good as the previous 2. He is 6-5, 305 and from Texas powerhouse 6A football team Allen which is just outside of Dallas, Texas. He played Right Tackle last season, but moved over to Left Tackle when Jake Matthews moved on to the NFL. Ogbuehi should still be drafted in the first round, but not as high as Luke Joekel or Jake Matthews.

5. La’el Collins – LSU: The LSU offense is one of the best at running the ball in the country. Collins is a road grader that  excels at run blocking. But, he has had success as a pass protector in 2013 when the Tigers threw the ball more often. Collins played Offensive Guard in 2012 and moved to Tackle in 2013.  Collins is a 6-5, 320 home grown product from Baton Rouge and a long term starter.

Collins could easily be rated higher on my list.

6. John Theus – Georgia: The Georgia Bulldogs’ Left Tackle is a big redhead from Jacksonville, Florida at 6-6, 315. The Georgia run game is always impressive with Todd Gurley and Nick Chubb, plus a tremendous Offensive Line led by John Theus and senior Center David Andrews.

John Theus is one of those guys that I love not only because he is a talent but because he has announced he is coming back for his senior season.

7. Laremy Tunsil – Ole Miss: For those that don’t believe recruiting is important, Laremy Tunsil was the number 1 Offensive Tackle recruit in the nation in the 2013 recruiting class. He started almost immediately in college and next year before he declares for the NFL as most SEC juniors do, he will be a three year starter. The 6-5, 305 sophomore from Lake City, Florida has not been a disappointment.  In spite of being a true freshman playing the all important Left Tackle position, he only gave up one sack all year long in 2013. That’s an impressive stat if you are looking at who he played against.

8. Jake Fisher – Oregon:  The 6-6, 300 senior from Traverse City, Michigan was a difference maker for the Ducks over the years. He was injured this season and they had to play a true freshman in his spot and the offense slipped a bit while he was out. He wasn’t that impressive against the Buckeyes in the championship game, but the entire team was not as well.

9. TJ Clemmings – Pittsburgh: Clemmings is a 6-6, 315 senior Right Tackle from Teaneck, New Jersey.  Very good player and their Left Tackle, Adam Bisnowaty is good, too. Clemmings is a specimen that runs really well. Great run blocker and could play on the Left side as well as on the Right.

He should be one of the top Tackles taken in this next NFL draft and is scheduled to play in the Senior Bowl.

10. Daryl Williams – Oklahoma: Daryl Williams is a 6-6, 330 Lake Dallas, Texas. The Oklahoma Sooners had one of the top lines in the country with the other OT Tyson Thompson at 6-5, 325 from Pflugerville, Texas being outstanding as well. Both should be drafted and both are seniors. They paved the way for tremendous true freshman Running Back Samaje Perine, also from Pflugerville, Texas, to rush for 1,713 yards and 21 Touchdowns. The Sooners had a disappointing season, but it was not the fault of their Offensive Line.

11.Cam Robinson – Alabama: Cam Robinson is one of the best, if not the very best, true freshman Offensive Tackle most people ever laid eyes on. He started at Left Tackle from the very first day at probably the premier program in all of college football. The 6-6, 325 monster from Monroe, Louisiana was another guy that proves recruiting does matter because he was the top Offensive Tackle recruit in the nation last year.

12. Jake Conklin – Michigan State: The 6-6, 305 sophomore Jake Conklin from Plainwell, Michigan is an outstanding Left Tackle for the Michigan State Spartans. Conklin just doesn’t give up many sacks. He’s got excellent feet and lateral quickness.

Michigan State had it’s best offense in their history in 2014 and Conklin was a major reason for that. Still a really young guy and growing. Conklin is the other side of the recruiting spectrum of Cam Robinson and Laremy Tunsil in that he was totally unranked coming out of high school and has been way better than expected.

13. Taylor Decker – Ohio State: Decker is a 6-7, 315 junior from Vandalia, Ohio. The Buckeyes only returned one starter this season up front and that was Taylor Decker. Decker is the Left Tackle for the Ohio State Buckeyes and has annouced he is returning for his senior season. They struggled up front last year early on but came on strong when it mattered in the Big 10 Championship and in the playoffs. Behind this Offensive Line, Ezekiel Elliott ran for nearly 700 yards in his last 3 games.

14. Rob Havenstein – Wisconsin: The giant 6-8, 330 Right Tackle from Mount Airy, Maryland is a  superb run blocker. Havenstein and his Offensive Line sidekicks opened up holes for Melvin Gordon rushing for the second highest total in NCAA history only behind the immortal Barry Sanders. The Wisconsin offense was 4th in the entire country in rushing and that’s partly on the Running Backs, but also on their outstanding Offensive Line led by Havenstein. Not only was Gordon the top rusher in the entire nation, but back up Corey Clement ran for 949 yards.
