Alabama is Still the Kings of the SEC

In the history of the Southeastern Conference, nobody has won as many football championships as the Alabama Crimson Tide. It’s not even close, really.

Alabama has 23 SEC Championships.

The next closest is the Tennessee Volunteers with 13. The Georgia Bulldogs have 12 and the LSU Tigers have 11.

Powerhouse programs such as Florida and Auburn only have 8 apiece.

If that’s not enough evidence for you, then consider Alabama’s all time record against SEC opponents.

Alabama is 42-35-1 against in-state rival Auburn.

The Tide is 52-37-8 against Tennessee.

They are 49-25-5 all time against LSU.

Bama is 37-25-4 against Georgia.

Ole Miss has been dominated 51-9-2.

While Mississippi State has been beaten up 79-17-3.

Alabama is 36-2-1 against Kentucky, which is more like a massacre than domination.

They are 12-3 against South Carolina.

24-14 is their record against Florida.

They have beaten Arkansas to the tune of 18-7.

Vanderbilt has been handled easily 61-18-4.

The newcomers Texas A%M and Missouri have had it easy compared to the rest.

They have beaten the Aggies in 5 out of 7 games.

Missouri is the only SEC team that has not been dominated by Alabama and they are tied 2-2 all time. Once they play a few times, those numbers will be corrected in favor of the Crimson Tide.

This past weekend, the number 1 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs came in to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to play the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Generally, a top ranked team will be favored in any game. Yet, the Crimson Tide was favored in this game. With that all time 79-17-3 record against Mississippi State, the guys from Alabama really should be favored.

Mississippi State came into this game at 9-0 and with their Heisman candidate Dak Prescott at Quarterback, outstanding Running Back Josh Robinson and super dangerous Wide Receiver

De’Runnya Wilson. Their defense was called the ‘Psycho defense’ and had been getting it done all season long.

Senior Quarterback Blake Sims had played little before this season, but has done really well with his one year. The Tide has a two headed monster at Running Back in T.J. Yeldon and Derrick Henry. Alabama also has possibly the best player in the country in Wide Receiver Amari Cooper. If I had a Heisman vote, it might be for Cooper because he is outstanding and is having an incredible season.

Alabama has far better athletes on defense than Mississippi State and is ranked in the top 10 nationally in total defense. Mississippi State is not even on the horizon defensively.

This highly anticipated battle lived up to the hype for the most part. Alabama jumped out to a 19-0 lead, but Mississippi State played relatively well on defense. Their offense, on the other hand, was one mistake after another. Dropped passes and interceptions were the order of the day for Dak Prescott and his receiver group.

Prescott wound up throwing for 290 yards and 2 Touchdowns and he ran for 82 yards on 22 carries. The Crimson Tide did not completely shut him down, but they did slow him enough.

Prescott kept trying to bring his guys back and showed a huge heart in the process. I didn’t get why the Mississippi State Bulldogs coaching staff gave up on the running attack. Josh Robinson had almost a 1,000 yards rushing coming in and he carried the ball only 12 times for 37 yards and was tackled for a safety in the first quarter.

Prescott threw 48 passes which is 15 more than he had thrown in any other game all season. Mississippi State appeared to have panicked and abandoned their game plan which had produced a 9-0 record coming into this game.

However, despite being down 19-0 in the 2nd quarter, the Bulldogs kept fighting back. They kicked a Field Goal to make it 19-3. Then they kicked another to close to 19-6.

Mississippi State tried to make it 19-13 and Prescott threw a costly interception in the End Zone. But, they did finally score a Touchdown and did officially close to 19-13.

Alabama answered the challenge and scored again increasing their lead to 25-13. A 2 point conversion failed, keeping the Bulldogs within 12 points of the lead and a very dangerous Quarterback trying to close the gap.

Prescott did indeed lead his team down for another score closing the gap to 25-20 which was ultimately all they could do.

This game was a huge disappointment for the Mississippi State Bulldogs leaving a lot of people scratching their heads and wondering what happened.

Was Alabama just the better team?

Mississippi State had 428 total yards to Alabama’s 335 total yards. The Mississippi State Bulldogs just seemed to be tight going in and never really loosened up. Too many mistakes is just not going to get it done against a top team like Alabama. The bulldogs had 3 turnovers to the Crimson Tide’s 0.

The Alabama Crimson Tide seemed loose and relaxed. After all, this program has been in this situation many, many times. Mississippi State has really never been in a situation like this and may never be again.

Apparently, that makes a huge difference. Still, a college football fan has to be proud of he Bulldogs for keeping it close and making this a fun game to watch even if they did lose in the end.

The Mississippi State Bulldogs still has an important game lying in wait in the annual Egg Bowl.

The Alabama Crimson Tide still has to get by their chief in-state rival in the Iron Bowl.

But, expect the Tide to prevail because they are still the king of the SEC. They always have been and maybe they always will be.
