The Cowboys had the Big 12 wrapped up in 2013.

They crushed frontrunner Baylor at home and only had to beat Oklahoma to win the championship.

Didn’t happen. Bedlam game cost the Cowboys once again as OU continued its domination over it’s in state rival. This year, Bedlam is in Norman making beating the Sooners an even taller task for the Cowboys.
An even taller task will be facing defending national champion, Florida State in Arlington first game of the year.
If they can beat Texas Tech in the Big 12 opener for them, they have it fairly easy until they finish up with all the contenders in the Big 12 with Kansas State, Texas, Baylor and then Oklahoma. Baylor will be out for blood after the beat down they received in Stillwater last season.

JW Walsh (6-2,205) finally gets his chance to shine as the QB at Oklahoma State. He has started some in each of the last 2 seasons, but the other QB for OSU, Chelf is gone. Walsh is a good passer and an equally good runner and he returns for his junior year in Stillwater.
In 2013, he threw for 1333 yards and ran for 294 yards. Walsh threw for 1564 yards as a freshman in 2012 and ran for 290. So, he has plenty of experience and should perform well for the Cowboys in 2014.

Mason Rudolph (6-4,215) a super freshman from Rock Hill, South Carolina could be the main back up. Hopefully, the Cowboys can redshirt him, but he is a fantastic prospect. He is rated as a drop back type passer but Rudolph can run. He’s got a great arm and can run the spread type offenses. Great pick up for the Cowboys and I can’t believe South Carolina or Clemson let him get out of the state.

Don’t rule out Daxx Garman (6-2,205) for the QB job. Garman last played as a junior in high school, but signed with Arizona and then redshirted. He transferred to Oklahoma State as a walk on. Ex Cowboy QB Brandon Weeden speaks highly of Garman. It will be tough to beat out Walsh or Rudolph, but Garman is the kind of guy one call pull for.

Also on the roster and possible dark horse contenders for the starting QB are Richard Lagow (6-6,230) a transfer from Connecticut, and Jake Hubenak (6-2,190). Hubenak is from Georgetown, Texas and threw for over 4000 yards in his senior year alone. The guy is a leader and a winner.

Desmond Roland (6-2,210) is back at Running Back. He didn’t start until part way through the year a season ago or he would have had a bigger year. As it was, he still rushed for 811 yards and 13 TDs. He has 1207 yards and 17 TDs through his career, so far. Should be All Big 12 this season.

Sophomore Rennie Childs (5-10, 205) looks like the next big thing for the Cowboys at RB. He rushed for 189 yards as a true freshman.

Caleb Muncrief (5-8,190) has played a little. 4 star recruit out of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, Devon Thomas (5-11,200) might push the others for playing time. If Childs is not the next star for the Cowboys at RB, it could be Thomas.

The Cowboys signed JC RB Tyreek Hill (5-8,190). Hill is super explosive with tremendous quickness. They may plan to use him as a receiver, but he can play either position and is extremely dangerous with the ball in his hands.

Jeremy Seaton (6-2,250) is a former walk-on and can play TE or FB. Great blocker and good hands, he had 6 receptions for 56 yards and 2 TDs in 2013. Derek Branson (6-2,250) is a senior eager to contribute at Fullback.

The Cowboys lost 3 out of 4 of their top WRs from last year, but don’t feel sorry for the school that produced Dez Bryant and Justin Blackmon. Jhajuan Seales (6-2,190) had 39 catches last season for 571 yards and 3 TDs and will be the Cowboys top receiver this season.

Marcel Ateman (6-4,210) was impressive as a freshman hauling in 22 passes for 276 yards. Brandon Sheperd (6-1,195) had 14 catches for 223 yards. David Glidden (5-7,185) caught 15 passes good for 173 yards. The Cowboys have some depth with Blake Webb (5-11,190), CJ Curry (6-2,205) and Austin Hays (6-2,185). Hays was outstanding as a freshman in 2012, but missed last season due to injury.

The Tight End seems to be a dying breed in a lot of college offenses these days which I feel is a huge mistake. The Cowboys have several on their roster, but they are all young and inexperienced. Blake Jarwin (6-5,240) could be the leading candidate for the position. Jordan Frazier (6-5,240) is a big recruit out of Missouri and could play right away. He caught 50 passes his senior year of high school and could be a big time receiver out of the Tight End position.

Matthew Hirst (6-3,220) and Tyler Holcomb (6-3,230) are redshirt freshmen that could provide quality depth here.

Offensive line could be a big problem for Oklahoma State this season. First of all, they lost their long time Offensive Line coach considered to be one of the top coaches in the country, Joe Wickline. His replacement is Bob Connelly, but a coach like Wickline is not easy to replace.

Daniel Koenig (6-6,300) returns at Left Tackle. Chris Grisbhy (6-5,325) is back at the other tackle. Back ups at tackle should be Brandon Garrett (6-5,295) and Zachery Crabtree (6-7,290).

Center Jake Jenkins graduated and elected not to come back leaving a void up front. Sophomore Paul Lewis (6-3,295) probably moves into the starting slot at center.

The guard positions are up for grabs, but probably Zac Veatch (6-4,290) winds up at one spot and Devin Davis (6-5,310) could be at the other. Veatch is a converted TE that is rough and rugged. Davis would have started at Tackle last season if not for injury and could slide inside to guard as they have few other options. Davis may wind up being the Cowboys best Offensive Lineman.

The Cowboy defense lost way too many guys and the biggest loses are CB Justin Gilbert who was maybe the top CB in the country. Plus, MLB and heart and soul of their defense, Caleb Lavey. It’s going to be tough to fill these spots with quality bodies and especially in time to go up against Florida State in the season opener.

It all starts up front and James Castleman (6-2,300) is a quality DT. He had 33 tackles and 5 tackles for losses, plus a sack. Ofa Hautau (6-0,290) should move into the other spot. Hautau had 8 tackles 2 for losses and a sack in his first year at Stillwater. He was a JC transfer, and should be ready for a big season in his final opportunity.

Eric Davis (6-3,275), Ben Hughes (6-3,300) and Vincent Taylor (6-3,290) are young guys ready to get into the mix. Deonte Cruse (6-0,290) is a JC transfer that played very little last season and needs to step up for his senior season.

Jimmy Bean (6-5,250) returns at one Defensive End spot and he’s a good one. He had 34 total tackles with 10 being for losses. Throw in 5 sacks and 3 QB hurries. Sam Wren (6-2,255) was a back up on the other side last season and should step up. He had 22 tackles with 2.5 of those being for loss. Wren was a JC transfer a year ago.

Emmanuel Ogbah (6-4,270) was sensational as a freshman last year and could challenge for a starting spot this season. He finished with 20 tackles and 4 sacks. Tough player with excellent size.

Trace Clark (6-4,255) was a back up last season and is back for his third year.

Victor Irokansi (6-3,240), Vili Leveni (6-3,270) and Jeremiah Tshimanga (6-2,245) are young guys that may earn playing time.

Jordan Brailford (6-3,220) and Trey Carter (6-4,255) are 4 star recruits that could play right away.

The Cowboys lost 2 out of 3 starting LBs including 2 of the top tacklers on the team. They do return Weak Side LB Ryan Simmons (6-0, 240) and he is a good one. He made 67 tackles with 9 of those for losses and he had a sack. Simmons also had an interception and broke up a couple of passes.

In the middle, the Cowboys lost Caleb Lavey which is a big loss. But, they have Kris Catlin (6-2,225) expected to take over for him. He has a little experience but has big shoes to fill.

Seth Jacobs (6-2,220) played a little as a back up last season and could take over on the strong side. Dominic Ramacher (6-3,230) could play somewhere but the Cowboys have little others with experience.

Gyasi Akem (6-1,210) and Josh Mabin (6-1,215) are good highly recruited LBs coming in and could help instantly.

Defensive backfield lost nearly everybody like most of the defense which is why I didn’t pick the Cowboys lower on my list.

Only returning starter is Corner Back Kevin Peterson (5-11,185) and he had a couple of interceptions and 24 tackles. Ashton Lampkin (5-11,180) was one of the primary back ups and should start at the other corner spot, if he can hold off Miketavius Jones (5-10,175) who is one of the team’s fastest players. Look for Darrius Curry (6-1,190) to push for playing time after redshirting a year ago. Don’t rule out Taylor Lewis (6-0,180) and Jerel Morrow (6-0,180) a pair of super talented redshirt freshmen. Lewis is the son of Rod and Morrow is a really good long jumper. The Cowboys have plenty of talent at the corners, but not much experience. Chris Hardeman (5-8,190) is a 4 star recruit coming in at CB.

The Safety positions lost their 4 top players. Deric Robertson (6-2,200) and Jordan Sterns (6-1,200) should take the 2 safety spots. Recruits Dylan Harding (6-2,190) and Kirk Tucker (6-1,185) will need to be ready to play right away. The Cowboys also have JC transfer D’nerius Antoine (6-1,210) for instant help and they will need him.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys lost a lot of talent off of last year’s team. They have plenty of talent coming back and some talent coming in, but they lack experience across the board.

They have a really tough opening game, but could be all right after that if they don’t get blown out too much. I expect the Cowboys to finish about 4th in the Big 12.
