Unbeaten Western Michigan of the MAC

The Mid American Conference, otherwise known as the MAC, is not known for producing great football teams. Miami Ohio

Western Michigan is probably not a great team, either. But, right now, they are a pretty good team and they should remain unbeaten and win the MAC championship.

At 9-0 on the season and games remaining with Kent State, Buffalo and Toledo they have a really good shot at winning out.

Western Michigan Wide Receiver Corey Davis is a future NFL player and possibly a star there. With so many college football stars leaving early for the NFL, Davis coming back was a shock. In the 2015 season, Davis and fellow Wide Receiver Daniel Braverman caught just under 200 passes. Braverman ran a 4.47 40 for NFL scouts and he was taken in the 7th round of the NFL Draft. Even though Braverman has some speed, he’s only 5-10, 175. Davis probably has similar speed, but he is 6-3, 215. The NFL loves

bigger Wide Receivers.

Corey Davis is a big play guy that is a 4 year starter at Western Michigan since signing with the Broncos out of Wheaton, Illinois. As a freshman in 2013, Davis caught 67 passes for 941 yards and 6 Touchdowns. That was his only season where he did not exceed the 1,000 yard barrier.

Averaging over 18 yards per reception in 2015, the sophomore Davis caught 78 passes for 1,408 and 15 Touchdowns. Davis hauled in 90 receptions during his junior year and totaled 1,436 yards and 12 Touchdowns.

Davis is playing a large part of the Broncos successful season and he’s having a big year, so far. After 9 games, he has 61 receptions for 1,011 yards and 14 Touchdowns. This guy is big time. He’s got big time speed, strength and hands and I would not be surprised if Corey Davis went fairly early in the NFL Draft. Teams are going to covet what he brings to the table.

Junior Running Back Jarvion Franklin is also from the state of Illinois hailing from Tinley Park. He was not even ranked coming out of high school and his only offers were from MAC programs. Even though he wasn’t highly recruited, he did start his very first college game against Purdue and he ran for 163 yards and 3 Touchdowns. Not bad for an unranked recruit, but why would he be unranked when he is supposedly 6-0, 220 and ran a 4.45 40 yard dash.

As a true freshman, Franklin ran for 1,551 yards and 24 Touchdowns. But, as great of a season as he had as a freshman, Franklin did not have a great sophomore year. Was it the infamous sophomore slump? He only ran for 735 yards and 5 Touchdowns. But, he averaged nearly 5 yards per carry and just didn’t get the ball a lot. While Franklin had a rough season, freshman Jamauri Bogan ran for 1,051 yards and was the MAC freshman of the year.

This season, Jarvion Franklin is redeeming himself, but he didn’t get off to the greatest of starts. He

didn’t break 100 yards rushing in a game until the Broncos 5th game against Central Michigan. He took off at that point and now he has over 1,000 yards rushing on the year.

Either Jarvion Franklin of Western Michigan, or Kareem Hunt of Toledo will probably be the top Running Backs in the MAC this year.

The heart and soul of the Western Michigan football team is Quarterback Zach Terrell. Like Corey Davis, Terrell is a 4 year starter. Terrell was a 1 star recruit from Fort Wayne, Indiana in the 2012 recruiting class. He redshirted as a freshman and started in 2013 as the Broncos finished with an embarrassing 1-11 record.

The Broncos improved in a hurry finishing with an 8-5 record in 2014 and that was with Terrell throwing for over 3,400 yards and 26 Touchdowns and Franklin running for over 1,500 yards and 24 Touchdowns.

Western Michigan finished with an 8-5 record again in 2015, before having a brilliant season in 2016.

Terrell’s back up is Tom Flacco, the younger brother of Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Joe Flacco.

The other outstanding Offensive player for the Broncos is Left Tackle Chukwuma Okorafor. Unlike the others, Okorafor was pretty heavily recruited out of Southfield, Michigan. Besides Western Michigan, he was recruited and offered by Florida, Nebraska, Arkansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, North Carolina State and Virginia. However, neither Michigan, or Michigan State offered and maybe he wanted to stay close to home.

He was listed at 6-5, 270 in that recruiting class. Now, Okorafor is supposedly 6-6, 330. He is the best Offensive Lineman in the MAC and he should be pretty popular with NFL scouts. Okorafor has the talent to eventually play Left Tackle in the NFL.

The defensive side of the ball, the top tacklers are Linebackers Robert Spillane and Asantay Brown, plus freshman Defensive Back Justin Tranquill.

Spillane was a high school Running Back that signed with the Broncos in the 2014 recruiting class. That

was the loaded class with Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Elijah Hood, Christian McCaffrey and Royce Freeman to just hit the best of the best among that group.

Spillane, Robert not Mickey, was converted to Linebacker immediately. He is not related to Mickey Spillane, the author, but his grandfather was Johnny Lattner who won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame in 1953. That’s pretty good blood lines.

Spillane started 8 games as a true freshman, and he was 4th on the team in tackles. He started 6 games as a sophomore last season, but was lost for the season in the 8th game of the year against Eastern Michigan. Spillane is 6-2, 220 and leading the team in tackles this season. He had 14 tackles against Eastern Michigan in what may have been a personal revenge game.

Asantay Brown was also a member of that 2014 recruiting class. It was a national trend that season and a that 2014 recruiting class may have been the best ever, it was Western Michigan’s best recruiting class in ages.

Brown came in listed as an athlete and 6-0, 180. His game, at Linebacker, is about pure speed, and he supposedly runs the 40 yard dash in under 4.5 seconds. He is second on the team in tackles, currently, behind Spillane.

He has only grown to about 6-0, 205 and may not get much bigger. But, Western Michigan doesn’t need him bigger and he led the team in tackles in the 2015 season as a sophomore. The junior from Muskegon, Michigan played Wide Receiver in high school.

Justin Tranquill is the younger brother of Notre Dame Defensive Back Drue Tranquill. He is a redshirt freshman from Fort Wayne, Indiana and he had offers from Big 10 teams and others. But, he chose Western Michigan for whatever reason.  I normally use ESPN for recruiting info, but Scout.com had Tranquill rated much higher and he was the highest rated recruit in Western Michigan history.

My intention is not to leave out anyone, but these players have made a huge difference in Western Michigan’s 2016 season.
