Texas Longhorns Most Incredible Recruiting Day 2016

I have been a huge fan of football recruiting since the early 1970s. I have seen so many signing days come and go, but I do not remember a day as incredible as the Texas Longhorns had on February 3rd, 2016.

Going into the day, the Texas recruiting class was rated in the low to mid 30s. I believe that ESPN had them rated at #32 on Tuesday morning.

At that point, they had commitments from five 4 star recruits and nine 3 star recruits.

A lot of Horn fans were upset with the way recruiting was going.

On Tuesday morning the day before national signing day, they picked up the second rated Running Back in the state of Texas in Kyle Porter. He was a star player for perennial powerhouse Katy High School coming off of yet another state championship. The Longhorns were not expected to win his services.

Porter is a 4 star recruit and could be a shot in the arm for the Texas running game.

Tuesday night, the Longhorns picked up a commitment from New Orleans St Augustine High School Defensive Tackle D’Andre Christmas-Giles who was also a 4 star recruit.

St Augustine also produced LSU’s Leonard Fournette as well of dozens of other top football players.  Christmas-Giles was supposed to announce on signing day, but he apparently wanted some of his own time in the limelight and understandably so.

With signing day upon them, the Horns got it going really early picking up two Defensive Tackles from the Dallas area in Marcel Southall from Duncanville, Texas. Then, they grabbed Chris Daniels from Euless Trinity. Both of these guys were rated as 4 star recruits.

Later in the morning, they picked up one of the top Safety recruits in the country in Brandon Jones from Nacogdoches, Texas.

Then, they stole a recruit from LSU in Manor, Texas Linebacker Erick Fowler. Stealing recruits may be unscrupulous but Manor is basically just outside of Austin city limits and it’s important to keep the best players at home.

They were also hoping to land his teammate, Dontavious Jackson, but he opted for Florida State instead. Even the most incredible of days can have a defeat or two.

To offset the loss of Jackson, the Horns picked up the second ranked Outside Linebacker in the country, Jeffrey McCulloch. Nicknamed the Shark, McCulloch is an outstanding prospect from Aldine Davis High School.

Teaming up with last year’s outstanding Linebacker Malik Jefferson, the Longhorns could be a force at the position for the next few years.

The Longhorn coaches and fans had to wait a little while for their final commitment of the day. But,  Jordan Elliott, the one time Baylor, Houston and Michigan commit made it official and signed with the Texas Longhorns.

Over a two day period, Texas picked up 8 new 4 star recruits and 1 additional 3 star recruit.

Texas returns only 3 experienced Defensive Tackles for 2016. There is a good chance that Jordan Elliott, Chris Daniels, Marcel Southall, D’Andre Christmas-Giles and Gerald Wilbon will have a chance to see early playing time.

Safety Brandon Jones is too good to keep off the field. Linebackers Jeffrey McCulloch and Erick Fowler are good enough to play as freshmen.

4 star Running Back Kyle Porter is a star and should compete with D’Onta Foreman, Chris Warren and Kirk Johnson for playing time.

Quarterback Shane Buechele might be the 4 star recruit with the best chance of playing early with the unstable Quarterback position at Texas.

ESPN dropped the Texas recruiting class from the low to mid 30s to number 10 in their rankings.

It was an incredible day for coach Charlie Strong, his staff and Texas Longhorn fans. Throw last year’s class in with this one and the Longhorns appear on their way to getting back into the national picture.
