Gelen Robinson, Son of Big Dog

I remember thinking that my dad was really tall when I was about 6 years old. He really wasn’t and I wonder how Gelen Robinson felt when he was a little kid like I was.

My father was probably an even 6 foot tall, while Gelen Robinson’s father was 6 foot 7 inches.

His father just happened to be former NBA player Glenn Robinson II, and while 6’7″ isn’t tall in the NBA, it is tall to a small child. Dad might even be scary when his nickname is Big Dog and he is 6-7, 245 and maybe bigger after he retired.

Gelen may have also thought about how life would be when he got to be as tall as his father. Maybe he had NBA dreams as well.

Gelen’s older brother, Glenn III, probably felt the same way. Glenn Robinson III ditched his father’s school and headed north to Michigan where he helped the Michigan Wolverines to some success before jumping ship for the NBA. Glenn III is 6-6, 225.

Basketball ran in the genes for the Robinson family.

Big Dog Glenn Robinson II was a basketball player at Purdue from 1991 until 1994. The one and done players were not that common in those years and it was worth the wait for Glenn Robinson. He was 2nd team All American in 1993 and then consensus 1st team All American in 1994.

The second Glenn Robinson, AKA II, made his way to Purdue University from Gary, Indiana.

As a high school basketball star at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Gary, the 6-7 Big Dog was obviously great. During his senior year, he led the Roosevelt basketball team to the state championship in Indiana. That was a pretty big deal, winning the state basketball championship. Indiana is a state that truly loves it’s basketball from the tiny town of French Lick, which was the home of legendary Larry Bird, all the way up to the state’s largest city, Indianapolis. Guys like Bird and Damon Bailey are legends in that state among many others.

Roosevelt, led by Glenn Robinson II took on Brebeuf Jesuit led by it’s star Alan Henderson. Probably Jesuit was a one man team, but Henderson was a real man. He was 6-9 and later would star at Indiana and still be a rival to the great Big Dog at Purdue. Henderson was a 1st round draft pick by the Atlanta Hawks and he played 13 years in the NBA.

Gary Roosevelt beat Jesuit to win state and Glenn Robinson II was crowned Mr Basketball in the state of Indiana.

That’s a pretty big deal. Mr Basketball is like winning the Heisman Trophy in that state.

Glenn Robinson II was the first player taken in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Milwaukee Bucks and he played 12 seasons in the league. Some people might think Big Dog was a disappointment in some ways, but he did average over 20 points per game during his career with Milwaukee, the Atlanta

Hawks, the Philadelphia 76ers and the San Antonio Spurs.

It was a different life for his son, Glenn III. He grew up in St John, Indiana, which is a little different of an environment than Gary. But, his basketball talents still manifested and he had some high school success. He finished 4th in the Mr Basketball voting and then Robinson moved on to play basketball at Michigan and then it was to the NBA where he currently plays for the Indianapolis Pacers.

With a  father standing 6-7 and an older brother at 6-6, Gelen Robinson must have wondered when he was going to get taller.

But, Gelen grew in other ways. He was shorter and stocky.

Gelen Robinson also played football.

I’ve written about the recruiting class of 2014 many times with it’s greatness in Running Backs. Players such as Leonard Fournette, Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey, Nick Chubb and Royce Freeman impressing the nation at Running Back. Then, there’s others like Michigan’s Jabril Peppers and Alabama’s Cam Robinson. But, I never wrote anything about the Big Dog’s son, Gelen Robinson.

ESPN’s recruiting services had Gelen Robinson ranked as their 96th best Outside Linebacker. They also had him at 6-2, 235 and a 3 star recruit. Robinson might be 6-2, but if he took his shoes off the truth comes out about his 6 foot oneness. How did that happen?

Well, no matter how it happened, it did happen and the 6-1 Robinson had to make the best of it.

These are not the days of Drew Brees at Purdue. They’ve been pretty awful for a while now. Recently, they fired their last coach Darrell Hazell and hired former Louisville and NFL Quarterback Jeff Brohm. At Western Kentucky, Brohm led the Hilltoppers to a 30-10 record in his first head coaching job. It’s going to be unknown for a couple of years whether Brohm can turn this program around.

I think he can. The Purdue Spring Game may have been the most exciting of any I watched and I saw most of them and all that were broadcast on the tube. Drew Brees played for Joe Tiller and this could be a return to that type of football as Brohm plays that exciting brand of football. Jeff Brohm

As a true freshman in 2014, Gelen Robinson played in every game. He finished with 20 total tackles and 2 Quarterback sacks. But, the Boilermakers only won 3 games.

As a sophomore in 2015, Robinson was up to 250 pounds on his 6-1 frame and he started 7 games at Defensive End. Gelen had 34 tackles and 9 tackles for loss, plus 1.5 Quarterback sacks. But, the Boilers still struggled as a team and only won 2 games.

Last season, Purdue got off to a 3-3 start and they fired head coach Darrell Hazell. The interim coach went 0-6, but Robinson wasn’t part of the problem.

He made 61 tackles from his end position with 8 tackles for loss and 5 Quarterback sacks. He also had a Sports Center play with an interception that he returned 78 yards for a Touchdown.

With new coach Jeff Brohm on the job at Purdue, Gelen Robinson moves inside to Nose Guard. He’s now 6-1, 285 and ready to clog up the middle for his defense.

It’s likely to be a rough start for Jeff Brohm, Gelen Robinson and the rest of the Boilermakers. They open the season on September 2nd, 2017 against Louisville. With returning Heisman winner Lamar Jackson, he is likely to run up the score on the rebuilding Boilers.

They have Ohio of the MAC next and the Bobcats are usually pretty tough unless you are Alabama. The Missouri Tigers are next and they aren’t what they were 2 or 3 years ago, but they may be a team on the rise with junior Quarterback Drew Lock.

Michigan is next and it doesn’t matter what the pundits say, the Wolverines will be really good again. It doesn’t get much easier with improving Minnesota next and then Wisconsin.

Purdue is likely not to win many of these games with a new coach and a new system and not that much talent returning. They could start off 0-6, or 1-5.

It is Gelen Robinson’s senior year and that’s a tough way to go out.
