Mike Williams and the Clemson Wide Receivers

Standing 6 foot 4 inches and weighing about 220 pounds, Mike Williams is a big target for a Quarterback. Williams is tall, fast and he has good hands. He was Clemson’s big play guy in 2014 and figured to be the man again in 2015. In 2014, Williams caught 57 passes and averaged 18.07 yards per reception.

As the 2015 season came along Clemson had Wofford on the schedule for their opening game. Big play Williams had 2 receptions for only 20 yards, but one catch was for a Touchdown.

But, later in the game Quarterback Deshaun Watson threw a short pass in the End Zone to Williams. The pass was a little high, but Williams is a big time Wide Receiver and he went up for it. When

coming down, the Wofford Defensive Back pushed him and Williams hit the goalpost awkwardly. Things got scary when he did not get up.

They wheeled Mike Williams off the field on a cart and his season was over. There was some thought that maybe his career might be over as well when the reports came out that he had broken his neck.

Mike Williams was a junior last year and I have little doubt if he had played through the season that he would have declared for the NFL Draft and he would have been a 1st round draft pick.

Williams did not participate in the Spring Drills, but he is supposed to be back in the Fall. I’m excited for him and I am sure all of the people of Vance, South Carolina share my sentiment. With Mike Williams healthy and back in the lineup, the Clemson receivers will be almost frightening.

The most dependable Wide Receiver the past 2 seasons has been Artivus Scott from Clearwater, Florida. Scott is 5-11, 190, but he is a warrior. He does lack ideal size, but he makes up for it in other areas such as quickness, hands and toughness.

As a true freshman in 2014 he led the team in receptions with 76 for 965 yards and 8 Touchdowns.

That was a pretty amazing year for a true freshman.

He topped that as a sophomore becoming Watson’s go to guy. That past year, Scott caught 93 passes for 901 yards and 6 Touchdowns.

The Tigers lost Charone Peake from last year, but the emergence of Deon Cain should offset that loss.

Cain was a true freshman last season and clearly he was a play maker. From Tampa, Florida the 6-2, 200 Cain has about as much potential as anyone.

He caught 34 passes in 2015 for 582 yards and 5 Touchdowns. The only problem with Cain is that he was suspended at the end of last year just when Clemson made the playoffs to take on Oklahoma and then Alabama. It’s not clear if Deon Cain can be depended on, but he is a talent.

A big surprise for the Clemson Tigers last year was walk-on Hunter Renfrow. He caught 33 passes last year, but his best game came in the championship game with Alabama. He caught 7 passes for 88 yards and 2 Touchdowns. Renfrow has a bright future in college football and maybe beyond.

Ray-Ray McCloud is another talent at Wide Receiver. As a true freshman last year, McCloud caught 29 passes for 251 yards and a Touchdown. The sophomore to be from Tampa, Florida is another

promising youngster.

6-2, 200 Trevion Thompson is another young receiver that produced as a freshman with 10 catches.

As if these guys weren’t scary enough for Defensive Backs, the Clemson Tigers signed 3 more outstanding Wide Receiver prospects.

Three 4 star freshmen could be contributing next season. 6-5, 200 Diondre Overton from Greensboro, North Carolina, 6-2, 200 Cornell Powell from Greenville, North Carolina and 6-2, 170 Tavares Chase from Plant City, Florida.

The Tigers will have the luxury of redshirting these guys if they want.
