SEC Quarterbacks 2017

Alabama: Anyone that has seen early enrollee Tua Tagovailoa knows that Nick Saban very well could have a Quarterback controversy on his hands. Tagovailoa is just one of those guys that will be hard to keep off the field and Jalen Hurts is one of those guys that doesn’t want to come off the field. No real player wants to lose playing time and the first time Hurts throws a pick, Bama fans are going to howl for his head. They will want the new guy, Tua Tagovailoa. But, as of now, Jalen Hurts is still the guy. Hurts threw for 2,780 yards as a surprising true freshman. He beat out Blake Barnett, Cooper Bateman and David Cornwell and now those guys are all gone. Whenever Hurts took over at Quarterback, all of the older Quarterbacks on the roster took off for new destinations. It’s either going

to be Jalen Hurts, Tua Tagovailoa, or the other incoming freshman, Mac Jones

Arkansas: Razorback fans are just like every other fan base, they want the second string Quarterback on the field and playing. When Brandon Allen used up his eligibility in 2015, younger brother Austin took over the starting role. In spite of throwing for 3,430 yards and 25 Touchdowns in his first season as a starter, the 15 Interceptions drove the Hog fans crazy. The Pig coaches aren’t crazy, and Austin Allen will again start for the Razorbacks and he will have a year of experience.

Last season, freshman Ty Storey backed up Allen, but he only completed 1 pass out of 4 attempts.

The fans are really eager to see giant redshirt freshman Cole Kelley from Lafayette, Louisiana. One of the bigger Quarterbacks around at 6-7, 260. The big guy has a big arm, but he has never played on the college level. Hyatt Daulton is an incoming freshman that was a 4 star recruit from Attalla, Alabama. Right now, he’s a thin 6-4, 180 but he probably has plenty of time to bulk up.

Auburn: It was a great day for Auburn when Art Briles was fired as the Baylor coach. Baylor Quarterback Jarrett Stidham was out the door and played at a Junior College for a year before transferring to Auburn. Stidham will make Auburn competitive again and in the short time he’s been at Auburn he has earned the starting job. Jarrett stidham auburn quarterback

Sean White is a model of toughness and he will return for the 2017 season. He’s not big, he’s not fast and he doesn’t have a great arm. But, he’s got a lot of heart and he will bring his A game.

JC transfer John Franklin did not work out so well and he’s at Wide Receiver where he can use that speed. Woody Barrett is another JC transfer that redshirted a year ago and I wonder if Stidham was not around that we might be talking about Barrett instead.

Malik Willis is a name to remember for the future. He was a 3 star recruit that should redshirt this year, but he might make an impact in the future.

Florida: If healthy, Luke Del Rio should be the man in 2017. But, the future is redshirt freshman Feleipe Franks is the future. At 6-6, 220, Franks is a guy with unlimited potential. He was the 5th ranked drop back passer on ESPN’s list for the 2016 recruiting class. But, Franks does have good mobility. In the same class as Franks was 3 star recruit Kyle Trask. What’s special about Trask is that he never started in high school. He impressed at a camp and was offered by the Gators. He’s big, at 6-4, 238 and he has a strong arm. Kyle Trask Florida QB

Jake Allen from Ft Lauderdale St Thomas Aquinas was a 4 star recruit and a member of the Gator’s 2017 recruiting class. Aquinas is maybe the top high school program in the nation for producing college and NFL players.

The Gators had no Quarterbacks when current coach Jim McElwain arrived. The best one they had was Will Grier who was suspended and lost in 2015.

Georgia: The Bulldogs signed the top Quarterback in the country in the 2016 class and he started all Jacob Eason has a year of experience under his belt and should be much improved over his freshman season. Depth could be a problem, but the Georgia coaches signed an incredible recruiting class in 2017 including 4 star Quarterback Jack Fromm who is already enrolled. Eason had a decent freshman season, but he may be pushed by the talented Fromm. QB

year as a true freshman. Now,

The only other Quarterback on the roster is walk-on Sam Vaughn, but he has some talent and was All State in high school.

Kentucky: Mark Stoops may have finally turned the corner at Kentucky with the Wildcats. But, after a stunning upset over in state rival Louisville, they looked horrible against Georgia Tech in their bowl game.

Rancho Cucamonga has always been one of my favorite names of cities, and it’s the home town of Kentucky Quarterback Stephen Johnson and he took over the starting role for the Wildcats in 2016. He replaced Drew Barker, who has a lot of experience and is still around. Luke Wright got some action last year and lends valuable depth. Gunnar Hoak was a 4 star recruit from Dublin, Ohio last year and he redshirted. This year’s recruiting class brought in one time Buckeye commit, Danny Clark from Akron, Ohio and Walker Wood from Lexington, Kentucky. Clark was a 4 star recruit and a talented player. The Wildcats will be fine at Quarterback for a while.

LSU: The Quarterback situation at LSU is still not fixed, but they have Purdue transfer Danny Etling for one more season. Brandon Harris graduated and transferred to North Carolina. Etling already had the job wrapped up and he threw for over 2,000 yards after replacing Harris. New Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada might be the guy to get things fixed with the passing game. Backing Etling should be sophomore Justin McMillan, but he’s thrown only one ball in his career. Lindsay Scott Jr is a redshirt freshman and the son of former Georgia Great of the same name who made a name for himself by saving Georgia’s season against Florida back in 1980. Run, Lindsay, Run,

Lowell Narcisse 6-2, 235 and Myles Brennan 6-4, 180 are both incoming freshmen with hopes of making the Tigers the kings of the SEC.

I don’t know why they just don’t try walk-on Tiger Scheyd since he has the perfect name for an LSU Quarterback.

Ole Miss: Shea Patterson was a true freshman last season and was forced into playing last year when Chad Kelly was injured. Patterson was the number one dual threat Quarterback in his recruiting class of 2016 and he looks to be the real deal. Patterson has a big arm and he can run and the comparisons are already happening to other running Quarterbacks like Johnny Manziel.

Say what you want about Ole Miss, but they have a load of talent at Wide Receiver making Patterson’s job much easier. Backing up Patterson this season should be Junior College transfer Jordan Ta’amu and Jason Pellerin who also plays Tight End.

He was only rated a 3 star prospect, but Alex Faniel is a 6-6, 230 passer from Glen Allen, Virginia.

Mississippi State: There aren’t a lot of stronger runners at the Quarterback position than Bulldog Quarterback Nick Fitzgerald. It was amazing to watch the 6-5, 230 Fitzgerald take off and just leave Defensive Backs. He’s got some amazing wheels for a big guy and he lead the Bulldogs in rushing last year with 1,375 yards and 16 Touchdowns. He threw for just over 2,400 yards, but he’s still a project as a passer.

Backing him will be a talented true freshman from New Orleans, Keytaon Thompson. The 6-5, 225 Thompson was not rated very highly, but he looks good from what I have seen.

Missouri: Drew Lock is back and he has the tools to be a very effective Quarterback this year. He showed improvement from his freshman season to his sophomore and should continue this season. He’s athletic and has a strong enough arm to be a top Quarterback. Backing Lock should be junior Jack Lowary, and redshirt freshmen Micah Wilson and Hayden Rymer. Incoming freshman Taylor Powell will likely redshirt.

South Carolina: One of the best young athletes in the country last season was true freshman Jake BentleyBentley

Gamecock Quarterback

Bentley has the talent and the ability to become a big time Quarterback.

Bentley had better stay healthy since Brandon McIlwain saw the writing on the wall and transferred out. Michael Scarnecchia and incoming freshman Jay Urich are the only other scholarship Quarterbacks on the roster. Danny Gordon and Bailey Hart were walk-on players that figure to gain by the lack of numbers. But, Jake Bentley is definitely the man here and should be the best passing Quarterback in the SEC over the next couple of years.

Tennessee: A royal battle is underway to replace Joshua Dobbs. Quinton Dormady from Boerne, Texas was the back up last season and he is a talented guy with a good and accurate arm. He is about 6-4, 215 and won’t give the Vols the mobility of Dobbs, but Dormady is an athlete. He can make any of the throws. Dormady is battling with redshirt freshman Jarrett Guarantano from Lodi, New Jersey. Guarantano was more highly recruited, but Dormady was injured in high school. They are similar in size and arm strength, with Dormady having the edge with experience. We will have to wait till late summer to find out who wins. Will McBride is an incoming freshman from League City, Texas and will probably redshirt.

Texas A%M: Senior Jake Hubenak is the only player on the roster with any experience and he has started some. He might have started last season, but Oklahoma transfer Trevor Knight took the job. The job is not necessarily Hubenak’s either with true freshman Kellen Mond vying for playing time as well as redshirt freshman Nick Starkel. Mond was one of the highest rated Quarterbacks in this year’s incoming class and he has a good shot at starting. Connor Blumrick is another incoming recruit and a 3 star, but he will likely redshirt this season. He’s got great size and he could be a dark horse in the future Quarterback competition.

Vanderbilt: Kyle Shurmur is back for his junior season and hopefully things will improve for him. What Shurmur has going for him other than his dad being Pat Shurmur is the return of Ralph Webb at Running Back. Webb is tough and one of the SEC’s best kept secrets. Shurmur threw for over 2,400 yards last season, but he had more picks than Touchdowns. Shurmur is set in stone, and as far as depth the Commodores have two guys with cool names. Shawn Stankavage is a junior from Durham, North Carolina who has never played because of injuries. Duece Wallace is a redshirt freshman from one of my favorite places, Sevierville, Tennessee. The Duece was really good in high school, throwing for over 3,500 yards and leading his team to the state championship game.

In the 2017 recruiting class, the Commodores signed Brantley, Alabama’s Jacob Free. Rated a 3 star prospect by ESPN. Free is 6-5, 205 with a lot of upside.
