Best Returning Wide Receivers 2017

This is this blogs guess on how the Wide Receivers might be ranked by season’s end. Otherwise, these are guys to keep an eye on during the season.

These are just projections at this point:

1. Deon Cain – Clemson: Big play guy who will replace Mike Williams as the Tiger’s big target. Cain always seemed to make the big plays his first two seasons with, or without, the presence of Mike Williams. He averaged almost 20 yards per catch on 38 receptions and scored 9 Touchdowns receiving which was just short of Williams’ 11 Touchdowns.

2. Ahmmon Richards – Miami: Reflections of Hurricane greats of the past. Richards has the speed and the hands to become a great one. He had a great freshman season, and he has a bright, bright future. The only thing that might hold him back this year is the Quarterback situation at Miami. Like Deon Cain, Richards was likely to take a reception the distance at any given time and he also

averaged just under 20 yards per catch. I think of Irvin and Blades when I see Richards.

3. Courtland Sutton – SMU: Big receiver with the hands, and athletic ability. NFL is drooling over this 6-4, 220 receiver and for good reason. Last year, Sutton caught 76 passes which he turned into 1,246 yards which he converted into 10 Touchdowns. He’s just a talent and I might should have him as the top guy. Sutton is a reason to watch SMU and coach Chad Morris. The next hot shot coach in this country is probably Chad Morris. He’s probably coaching at Texas A%M soon.

4. Collin Johnson – Texas: Texas has been awful in recent seasons, but the recruiting has been good. Johnson is even bigger than Sutton at 6-6, 220. He can leap out of this world and he has hands. He also has good speed for his size. Son of a Texas legend, an All American and All Pro Johnny Johnson. He only caught 28 passes as a true freshman, but he will be much busier during 2013 with a different coaching staff and experienced Quarterback.

5. Christian Kirk – Texas A%M: Great return man as well as a wide out. He was the highest rated receiver recruit in the country a couple of years ago and has done well. He is a difference maker both as a receiver and a punt return man and he could be the best in the country. He caught 83 passes during his sophomore season alone. There’s no doubt he will be declaring for the NFL after this season.

6. Calvin Ridley – Alabama: Speedster could be the top rated guy. Ridley’s numbers dropped off dramatically from his incredible freshman season, but that really doesn’t matter. Ridley is a talent and that’s all there is to that. If the Crimson Tide coaches decide to throw the ball more, then Ridley will have a great season in 2017 and leave for greener pastures and big bucks.

7. Juwan Johnson – Penn State: Johnson’s ranking is based on his spring game performance and his size and potential. Johnson is another big receiver at 6-4, 220 and he is not afraid to go after the difficult catches that could possibly injure. He only made 2 receptions as a freshman last season, but there’s room for him to make plays this season. Juwan Johnson

8. Equanimeous St Brown – Notre Dame: St Brown is another tall fella listed at either 6-5, or 6-6, but really thin at about 205 pounds. St Brown can really run and led the Fighting Irish in receiving

this past year. The Notre Dame season was a disaster starting with the Overtime loss to Texas on opening day. In spite of the devastating loss, the Irish found a super talent in St Brown who could be one of America’s very best players this season.

9. Kabion Ento – Colorado:  You might say who? Yes, if he stays healthy, you will know about him soon. Ento is 6-3, 180 and supposedly can run sub 4,4 in the 40 yard dash and has a 40 inch vertical. He was a Junior College transfer and didn’t get much action as a junior because he didn’t know the offense well enough. But, look for him to have a breakout season as the Buffaloes continue coming on.

10. Antonio Callaway – Florida: Super swift, super slick receiver that is the Gators big play guy. The Miami native is going into his junior season and likely his last in college football. He averaged over 19 yards per reception as a freshman.

11. Jerry Jeudy – Alabama: True freshman that has never played a real game, but he looked incredible in spring game and he obviously will be a player. Will be a great one, obviously.

12. Van Jefferson – Ole Miss: The Rebels are loaded at Wide Receiver. The program is a mess right now, but they have a great QB and WRs. Jefferson is an exciting and explosive receiver that caught 49 passes last year.

13. Tavares Martin – Washington State: Belle Glade, Florida kid that had the nerve to go across the country and play for the Cougars. Washington State skill position players tend to be overrated, but I think Martin is the real deal.

14. Dante Pettis – Washington: The Huskies big play guy along with John Ross last season. Pettis is an outstanding punt returner as well as receiver. Ross was the kick returner and Pettis the punt returner and a very dangerous one.

15. Shay Fields – Colorado: Big play Shay, the Buffaloes have an exciting group of receivers led by Shay Fields, Devin Ross and Bryce Bobo. Fields had 9 Touchdown catches a year ago and he always seems to come up with the big catch.

16. James Washington – Oklahoma State: Small town Texas kid that has been fantastic as a college receiver and an outstanding deep threat. This past season, the 6-0, 205 Washington caught 71 passes and 1,380 yards and 10 Touchdowns. He’s always a threat to go deep and score.

17. Allen Lazard – Iowa State: Huge receiver at 6-5, 225. The state of Iowa doesn’t put out a lot of prospects but Lazard should be the real deal. He caught 69 passes last season for over 1,000 yards

18. Jordan Villamin – Oregon State: Even bigger receiver that can really run. Villamin came in at about 6-5, 240 with great speed, but he has dropped to around 225. He had a bad season in 2016, but look for him to bounce back this year.

19. DK Metcalf – Ole Miss: Second receiver from Ole Miss on list and there could be more. The team is loaded at Wide Receiver. Metcalf was little used as a freshman last year, but he is 6-4, 210 with tons of potential.

20. Bryan Edwards – South Carolina: Edwards may work out as Quarterback Jake Bentley’s go to guy. They hooked up well in the Spring game. Edwards has good size at 6-3, 210 and good speed and enough to be their big play guy.

Jester Weah – Pittsburgh: Averaged over 24 yards per catch, with great size.

Hunter Renfrow – Clemson: Former walk on is dangerous. Alabama fans hate him.

Ray Ray McCloud – Clemson: Dangerous player that could be in top 20.

Trevion Thompson – Clemson: Back up last season. Time to shine?

Cornell Powell – Clemson: Another back up with a need to step up.

Diondre Overton – Clemson: May be future star at 6-5, 200

Auden Tate – FSU: Big receiver that was injured in 2016.

Brad Stewart – Georgia Tech: Reliable receiver that also returns punts.

Jaylen Smith – Louisville: Could have easily been in top 20, big play guy.

Lawrence Cager – Miami: Huge receiver that could be big time.

Austin Proehl – North Carolina: Should be UNC top receiver, the son of NFL star Ricky Proehl.

Stephen Louis – NC State: Another big play guy with good size.

Kelvin Harmon – NC State: Great size and freshman last season.

Ervin Philips – Syracuse: smallish but caught 90 passes last season.

Richie James – Middle Tennessee: 105 receptions for 1,625 yards and 12 TDs

Linell Bonner – Houston: 96 receptions for 1,118 yards. 6-0, 205

Steven Dunbar – Houston: 6-3, 210 caught 53 passes.

Anthony Miller – Memphis: Miller caught 95 passes for 1,434 yards and 14 Touchdowns.

Devin Ross – Colorado: Super fast, big play guy.

Bryce Bobo – Colorado: Buffaloes have dangerous receivers and Bobo is good.

Deontay Burnett – USC: Good receiver straight out of Compton.

Stephen Mitchell Jr – USC: Not huge, but very good receiver.

Trenton Irwin – Stanford: Probably one of the more reliable receivers, not fast.

Raelon Singleton – Utah: big 6-3, 215 Texan with good skills
