Heisman Trophy Candidate Update

1. Lamar Jackson – Louisville: Jackson is doing things currently that nobody has ever done before. With 5 games remaining including the bowl, Jackson could set the bar really high. So far, he has thrown for over 2,500 yards and 22 Touchdowns and he has run for just under 1,000 yards and 16 Touchdowns. If I had my way, Louisville would be a playoff team and right now Lamar Jackson is the most explosive and dangerous player in the country. He just has so much speed and he has a howitzer for an arm.

2. Deshaun Watson – Clemson: The Tigers and Watson got off to a slow start, but they remain unbeaten and they took down Lamar Jackson and Louisville. Last year, Watson became the first player to pass for over 4,000 yards and run for over 1,000 yards while he finished 3rd in the Heisman voting. Like Jackson, Watson has thrown for 22 Touchdowns. But, right now, he only has 1 Touchdown rushing and 331 yards

on the ground. Watson was probably the Heisman favorite before the emergence of Lamar Jackson.

3. Jabrill Peppers – Michigan: Right now, Peppers is the trendy pick for the Heisman Trophy. Peppers came into Michigan as the top Cornerback in the nation and played there as a freshman. He was a Safety in 2015 and this year he was moved to Linebacker. On Offense, he plays Running Back or Quarterback in the Wildcat formation. Peppers is second on the Michigan team in tackles. He leads the team in tackles for loss and he is second on the team in Quarterback sacks. Peppers returns punts and kicks and is outstanding. He is 6th on the team in rushing, Peppers is just the best all around player in the country.

4. Dalvin Cook – Florida State: In my opinion, Cook should be back in the Heisman race after a tremendous performance against a good defense in Clemson. Cook is just one of the most exciting players in the country with the ability to take it the distance every time he touches the football. Cook also got off to a slower start and didn’t break the 100 yard barrier until the 4th game and when he did he ran for 267 yards. Since that game, Cook has been over 100 yards rushing in every game. Last week, against Clemson, he ran for 169 yards and 4 Touchdowns. He also had runs called back. Cook also has 23 receptions for 371 yards and another Touchdown. Cook has 1,069 yards rushing and 11 Touchdowns with 4 regular season games left and a bowl.

5. Jake Browning – Washington: Last year was the season of the freshmen Quarterbacks. Josh Rosen was the talk of the town, while Jake Browning up north in Seattle was an after thought.. But, what a difference a year makes. Browning has moved to the front while Rosen was lost for the season after struggling through most games. Browning has helped his Huskies to an 8-0 start while throwing for 28

Touchdowns so far. Browning is very mobile, but he’s not running much this season. He does have 4 Touchdowns rushing, but only 63 yards on the ground. The most impressive thing about Browning’s game this year is he is not turning the ball over much at all.

6. Mitch Trubisky – North Carolina: First year starter, Trubisky, is playing like a much more experienced Quarterback right now. Backing up Marquise Williams last season, Trubisky was impressive in limited playing time. This season, he has proven that last year was not a fluke. Trubisky has completed over 70% of his passes for over 2,300 yards and 18 Touchdowns against only 2 Interceptions. He is much like Browning in that he is mobile, but they don’t choose to exploit that. He does have 4 Touchdowns rushing. Three of the best Quarterbacks on this list are from the ACC.

7. JT Barrett – Ohio State: Surprisingly, the Buckeyes of Ohio State have been struggling on Offense much of the season even with the return of experienced JT Barrett at Quarterback. Barrett is a true dual threat Quarterback and not a pure passer, but he still has 1,675 passing yards and 17 Touchdowns on the season. He also has 531 yards rushing and 6 Touchdowns. The Buckeyes were upset by the Penn State Nittany Lions recently, but they still have a shot at the Big 10 title and a playoff slot. But, to do so, Barrett is going to have to pick it up as will their Offensive Line.

8. Leonard Fournette – LSU:  Fournette was the front runner for the Heisman last season until the LSU Tigers played Alabama and they shut him down. Silly reason to knock somebody out of the Heisman because Alabama had their defense stacked to stop Fournette and they couldn’t throw the ball. He finished with almost 2,000 yards rushing in spite of the Tigers missing one game due to the weather. Because of a bad ankle, Fournette has only played in 4 games this season. But, he has not been stopped when he has been able to play. Against Ole Miss last week, Fournette just ran wild gaining 284 yards and 3 Touchdowns. If LSU upsets Alabama on Saturday and Fournette, being healthy, has a huge game, then he is back in the middle of the Heisman race.

9. Saquon Barkley – Penn State: The 6-2 Penn State Nittany Lions are peaking now after beating Ohio State 2 weeks ago. Barkley is a freak of an athlete and he has 888 yards rushing at over 6 yards per carry. He also has 10 rushing Touchdowns. Barkley has 14 receptions for 213 yards and another Touchdown. Barkley, at 5-11, 225, supposedly runs the 40 yard dash in less than 4.4 seconds and he also returns

Kicks along with true freshman Miles Sanders. Barkley ran for over 200 yards against Maryland and Purdue.

10. Jalen Hurts – Alabama: The Offensive star for the top ranked Alabama Crimson Tide just has to be on the Heisman candidate list. Hurts is a true freshman from Channelview, Texas and the Crimson Tide Offense changed when Hurts was installed at Quarterback over Blake Barnett who has since transferred out. Hurts has over 1,500 yards passing and 12 Touchdowns. But, where Hurts has made a difference is with his feet. He’s not the same type of runner as Lamar Jackson, but is definitely mobile and a strong runner. He has over 500 yards rushing and 9 Touchdowns with most of them making a difference in several games.

11. Christian McCaffrey – Stanford: .McCaffrey is a freak athlete and he finished 2nd in last year’s Heisman race. But, 2016 has been tough on Stanford and on McCaffrey. As everyone knows, McCaffrey broke Barry Sanders decades old all purpose yardage record. Losing Quarterback Kevin Hogan and most of their Offensive Line has been a huge adjustment for Stanford. The Cardinal is 5-3 on the season, so far, and McCaffrey had to miss the Notre Dame game due to injury. He has 781 yards rushing and 5 Touchdowns. He is still returning punts and kickoffs but hasn’t scored this year on any that weren’t called back. McCaffrey is one of the better receivers out of the backfield and has 24 receptions for 207 yards and 2 scores.

12. D’Onta Foreman – Texas:  A big, talented Running Back at 6-1, 250. He has strength, power and some decent speed. In 8 games, Foreman has 1,105 yards and 10 Touchdowns. He faces one of the nation’s worst defenses on Saturday and should have big numbers. Texas has had 2 Heisman winners and both were big, powerful Running Backs. The Longhorns have a very average 4-4 record and teams like that rarely produce Heisman winners, so Foreman has little chance at all of winning.

13. Greg Ward Jr – Houston:  Ward and his Cougars were playing lights out for a while and maybe until they heard the rumors about their head coach leaving. Ward was hugely successful last season rushing for over 1,000 yards and passing for ovr 2,000 yards. This season, the Cougars impressively beat Oklahoma and moved way up in the rankings, but that all fell apart against Navy. They have struggled in the last 4

games. Ward is a very poor man’s Lamar Jackson with a big time arm and great running ability. He’s almost as explosive as anyone out there. He has no shot at winning a Heisman, but he’s a talent.

14. Patrick Mahomes – Texas Tech: A Texas Tech Quarterback will never win a Heisman, but Mahones has more passing yards than anyone in the nation. Mahomes is not your standard Texas Tech, or Washington State Quarterback and he has some wheels. He’s an outstanding athlete that might actually become the first Quarterback playing in this type of system that is successful at the next level.

15. Donnel Pumphrey – San Diego State: A San Diego State player will never win a Heisman, either. But, the 5-9, 180 Pumphrey leads the nation in rushing yardage with over 1,400 so far. The 5-9, 180 Las VEgas native is super quick and elusive. If you haven’t seen him play yet, you need to catch one of his games. He can’t win the Heisman, but he’s a special player. Marshall Faulk played at San Diego State, so don’t make the mistake of thinking nobody good can come from there.
