Michael Steele Georgia Bulldogs

In 1986, some filmmaker miscast Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Southern Sheriff in the movie Raw Deal. The people really getting the raw deal were the paying customers to this really bad flick, but it was good for quite a few laughs. At the beginning, in particular, Arnold’s wife was drunk and upset with him and threw the cake she had just baked at him. Arnold, in response, dealt a true classic of a movie line in ‘you should not drink and bake’ with his heavy German accent.

In 2001, a much lessor known actor played Officer Michael Steele in the movie classic Black Hawk Down. Much unlike Raw Deal, Black Hawk Down is an awesome movie. The person in charge of casting picked a British actor named Jason Isaacs to play the part of Michael Steele. If you are a

movie nut as I am, you will recognize Jason Isaacs as the very hate able British officer in the excellent Mel Gibson movie The Patriot. Isaacs is a great actor, but he’s obviously British and Michael Steele is as Southern as they come. In other words, Steele is the exact opposite of Arnold and Jason Isaacs.

The Black Hawk Down book portrays Michael Steele as a former Georgia Bulldog football player and a star on the 1980 national championship team.

Steele was on that team, but he was not a star at all. He was a walk-on football player, but he was not your average walk-on.

Steele stayed with the team for 5 years and never missed a single minute of practice. He went through 5 Spring camps, 5 seasons of football and in all of that time he not only never missed a practice, he also made every workout, and game. During two-a-day practices, Steele would drive home to his parent’s farm and work and then return in time for the next practice session.

Not only was he an excellent student without ever missing anything, but he was also in the ROTC program at Georgia.

He was almost something of an iron man.

When he graduated, he was commissioned an infantry officer in 1983. He was a Captain when he took part in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993 and he retired in 2010 as a Colonel.

The 1980 Georgia Bulldogs won the national championship. True freshman Herschel Walker gets most of the credit for that national championship, and rightfully so. Herschel Walker was a legend and one of the biggest difference makers in college football history.

But, Quarterback Buck Belue and Wide Receiver Lindsay Scott deserve a little credit as well and especially for the 93 yard Touchdown that they pulled off against Florida to win the game that season.

Credit should also go to the Offensive Line and the Defense for their roles that season.

Michael Steele was only a walk-on and a back up Offensive Lineman, but every team needs guys like Steele to practice and make the starters better.

It’s hard to find guys like a Michael Steele knowing fully well that they are never going to be a star player, but they are always out there working hard to make others around them better.

The casual fan is never going to know about a back up Offensive Lineman and few fans knew who Steele was. But, that never stopped him from going to practice and busting his tail.

College football needs the Michael Steele type of players.

Actor Jason Isaacs did a great job portraying Michael Steele in the crazy exciting Black Hawk Down movie.

I just wish he had used something of a Southern drawl.
