Josh Allen Wyoming Quarterback

They usually play late at night on a Saturday, but do what you can to watch the Wyoming Cowboys play this Autumn.

I do realize that nobody on the East Coast cares one iota about the Mountain West Conference. They are on the same level as the MAC in their eyes and hardly worth staying up past midnight to watch.

Good players can come from anywhere. Last year’s number 2 in the NFL Draft was from North Dakota State and Ben Roethlisberger was taken from Miami of Ohio with the 11th pick of the 1st round. His favorite target is Antonio Brown from Central Michigan. Talent comes from anywhere and everywhere.

Former FCS powerhouse North Dakota State head coach Craig Bohl took over as Wyoming head

coach before the 2014 season.  Like a lot of programs that are starting over, Bohl had a rough time. His first two Cowboy teams were pretty bleak finishing up 4-8 and 2-10.

During their 2-10 season in 2015, Josh Allen was a sophomore sitting at second string behind starter Cameron Coffman and just ahead of freshman Nick Smith. Coffman was injured and Allen would have gotten his shot as a sophomore. But, he was also hurt. Freshman Smith started a couple of games as a freshman as the team suffered through a 2-10 record. It was a far cry from what Craig Bohl had been used to at North Dakota State, where his Bisons won 3 national championships in a row.

Cameron Coffman had been a senior in 2015 and Josh Allen moved into the lineup as the starter.

2016 wasn’t easy for the Cowboys. After a tight win over Northern Illinois, the Cowboys were obliterated by the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln, Nebraska. It was not only the Wyoming Cowboys stinking it up in that game with Josh Allen throwing 5 Interceptions in that game. The Children of the Corn husked up the Cowboys 52-17, but it was Allen’s 2nd start as a college Quarterback in a hostile environment.

Josh Allen recovered and threw for 3,203 yards and 28 Touchdowns. The Cowboys tied for first place in the Mountain Division and had to play the San Diego State Aztecs for the championship of the Mountain West Conference. Wyoming beat the Aztecs by a single point in their first matchup two weeks before the championship game, but the Aztecs won the second game by 3.

Everybody wanted Allen to announce for the NFL and it was a down year for Quarterbacks. But, like Mitchell Trubisky, Allen had only played one season. Taking Trubisky was a risky move for the

Chicago Bears, and taking Allen would have been even more risky.

Allen is, however, an outstanding NFL prospect. Supposedly, at 6-5, 225 he is the perfect size to NFL brass. He is that prototype they are always looking for. Great size, great arm. and all of the other intangibles. Allen is an athlete and he ran for 523 yards and 7 Touchdowns. He’s fairly fast for a 6-5, 225.

Depending on the outcome of the 2017 season on so many levels, it may come down to Josh Allen, or Sam Darnold for the honor of being picked first in the 2018 NFL Draft. It may come down to Darnold first and then Allen.

If you get the chance, take the time to watch the Wyoming Cowboys in 2017 and check out Josh Allen. Or, you can just wait until he’s playing on Sundays.
