Luke Del Rio and the Florida Gators’ Spring

The Gators need a Quarterback, and they may have found one. But, Florida Gator fans were more excited about their new kicker than any other player.

Last year’s starters at Quarterback were Will Grier and Treon Harris. Grier is transferring to West Virginia after his troubles, and Harris is moving to Wide Receiver once he gets back from

suspension.

The battle was supposed to be between Luke Del Rio, the well-traveled son of Oakland Raiders coach Jack Del Rio, and Purdue transfer Austin Appleby. Throw in highly recruited true freshman Feleipe’ Franks and the Gators could have a Quarterback controversy.

Nobody at all really mentioned another true freshman, Kyle Trask. The freshman from Texas is an interesting prospect because he didn’t even start in high school at Quarterback. He is 6-4, 225 with a very nice arm and surprising athletic ability.

Luke Del Rio got the start in the Spring Game and he looked fantastic. I am not sure I’ve seen many guys lately throw a better ball than Del Rio. He throws a perfect spiral and right on target every time, at least he did on this day. Del Rio is not a big guy at around 6-1, 215. But, he knows the game and he appears to be something of a leader. He might have finally found his home in Gainesville, Florida.

Del Rio just looked really comfortable at Quarterback, but this was just the Spring Game.

Austin Appleby is a lot bigger than Del Rio at 6-4, 235 and he looked a lot more mobile than I thought he was. Appleby played 3 seasons at Purdue and he graduated and wanted a fresh new start. He looked better than I expected, but Del Rio looked much better. Course, Jim McElwain makes the big bucks to make those decisions.

Feleipe’ Franks looked absolutely awful. He’s going to need a redshirt and a lot of work. His first pass was an Interception and he just never stopped throwing them until mercifully he was pulled out of the game to save what confidence he may have left.

The other true freshman and early enrollee Kyle Trask looked amazingly good. Franks is 6-6, 215, but Trask has ideal size as well and he looked smoother and with the ability to adapt quickly.

The Gators Offensive Line was mostly horrible a year ago. They were one of the worst pass blocking lines in all of college football.

Will they be better this season? They should be with a lot of young talent gaining experience last season. Led by Left Tackle David Sharpe, Left Guard Martez Ivey and Center Cameron Dillard they could be much improved. Right Guard Tyler Jordan and Right Tackle Frederick Johnson have the potential to be really good.

Jordan Cronkrite started at Running Back, with another Jordan named Scarlett spelling him.

But, the player that is causing the most excitement is Junior College transfer Mark Thompson.

The Pennsylvania native played football at Dodge City Community College last year and was the #1 ranked Running Back in the JUCO ranks.

What’s exciting about Thompson is he is 6-2, 245 and he has decent speed.

Florida has 3 early enrollees at WR that look good. The best one may be Dre Massey 5-9, 185, but don’t overlook Freddie Swain 6-0, 180 and Joshua Hammond 6-1, 185.

Last year’s star freshman Wide Receiver, Antonio Callaway, is also suspended indefinitely like Treon Harris.

Wide Receiver CJ Whorton was one of the big stars of the day.

Florida is going to have a defense once again. Caleb Brantley, Jarrad Davis and Jalen Tabor are the stars of the Defense.

But, I like the look of redshirt freshman Kylan Johnson from Dallas at Linebacker. Also, Cornerback Quincy Wilson from Ft Lauderdale could ease the pain of losing Vernon Hargreaves. He’s a very

physical Corner at 6-1, 210.

Another possible up and coming player for the Gators’ defense is Defensive End Jabari Zuniga who is a redshirt freshman from Marietta, Georgia.

Florida fans appear more excited about the new kicker than anything. Eddie Pineiro, from Miami can just flat boot it.

He kicked a 52 yard Field Goal that cleared by a mile. It would probably have been good from 65, or so.

Pineiro missed from 54 yards, but it was plenty long enough. The Gator kicking woes seems to have been solved.

It also appears that the Quarterback problems have been fixed. Tune in and check out Luke Del Rio.
