Shane Buechele Texas Freshman Quarterback

Former Texas Ranger third baseman Steve Buechele is from California. After playing third base for the Rangers, Buechele eventually found himself back in Arlington, Texas as a Ranger coach.

He and his wife have 5 children and their oldest son played baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners. Another son played baseball at Fullerton College. The Buechele’s have two daughters that attend Oklahoma as regular students.

Shane Buechele had no ties whatsoever to the University of Texas.

But, he committed to them early and he never wavered with his decision. Maybe one of the more

significant reasons was early playing time.

At Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas Buechele threw for over 2,000 yards and he ran for over 600. He’s not very big at around 6-1, 180 and he is not an overly outstanding athlete. He is not gifted with a huge arm, but he is really accurate. He is not going to make anyone think of Deshaun Watson when he throws the ball or runs the ball, but he’s just one of those guys that makes plays. He is really accurate and consistent with his passing and he has instinct on when to dump the football, or take off running. He just seems to have that it factor that everyone always talks about.

Or, he seems to have it, but he hasn’t really done it at the college level in a real game as of yet.

Charlie Strong may have been a little stubborn with his choices of Offensive Coordinator, but that should be corrected with the hiring of Briles disciple Sterlin Gilbert. With the new up tempo Offense, Buechele is on equal footing with the Quarterbacks already on campus.

He actually looked far superior to any of the other Quarterbacks during Texas’ Spring Game in 2016, and Buechele is expected to start at Texas as a true freshman.

Charlie Strong has hesitated in naming a starter for the Texas season opener against Notre Dame, and Texas fans all over the map are freaking out about seeing Tyrone Swoopes back out there starting against the Fighting Irish.

That didn’t work out so well for the Longhorns last season.

The Texas Longhorns won’t be a playoff team this year, but last season was brutal for them. They played 18 freshmen during the season with 2 true freshmen starting in the Offensive Line all season long. Connor Williams started at Left Tackle and he appears to be a future star. Patrick Vahe started at Right Guard from day one and he improved as the year progressed.

This season, the Horns are supposed to start true freshman Zach Shackleford at the ever important Center position, but he will be a really good one.  Texas brought in quite a few potentially really good Offensive Linemen with the last recruiting class including Patrick Hudson, Jean Delance, JP Urquidez, Denzel Okafor and Tope Imade to add to Shackleford.

Shackleford is Texas’ lowest rated recruit and he is already starting before his first game.

They probably aren’t going to start as many freshmen, but they are going to play a lot of them and it’s going to be hard to be one of the best teams in the nation with that much youth.

If Texas can get some quality pass protection and a running game going with young backs D’Onta Foreman, Chris Warren III, Kirk Johnson and maybe true freshman Kyle Porter to relieve some pressure off of the Quarterback, it could be a good season for the Horns.

Texas has made a breakthrough at Wide Receiver as well with young talents John Burt, Devin Duvernay and Kirk Johnson’s younger brother Collin Johnson.

Burt is the Big 12 110 hurdles champion, Durvenay ran a 10.2 100 meters in high school and Johnson is 6-6 with catcher’s mitts for hands.

My grandma could probably hit one of those guys, and Texas fans will tell you that other Texas Quarterbacks like Tyrone Swoopes and Jerod Heard were actually worse than my grandma.

On the other side of the ball, the Longhorns defense would have made Rich Rodriguez at  Arizona

proud, but it was one of the worst defenses in the nation and maybe the worst in Texas Longhorn history. Their best player was a true freshman, Malik Jefferson and he went down for the season, the Texas coaches were left scrambling.

During part of one game in 2015, the Horns had 5 freshman in the Defensive Backfield playing together. Those guys are good, but really inexperienced.

When your favorite college football team is struggling, it’s not always just the Quarterback. But, Texas has had true Quarterback problems since Colt McCoy was injured against Alabama in the national championship game in January of 2010

But, if Shane Buechele is the Quarterback that most people think he is, then the Horns are on their way back after a few pretty tough seasons.

Should he falter, look for Sam Ehlinger from Austin Westlake to be the next savior of Texas football. After all, Ehlinger was the national Gatorade Player of the Year as a junior.

But, isn’t that the way it always works?
