It took McCartney a long time to get the program built up to the powerhouse it became in the late 1980s and most of the 1990s.

Just like when McCartney took over, Colorado hired current head coach Mike MacIntyre at a bad

time in Boulder.

Back in 2009, the San Jose State Spartans hired Mike MacIntyre to take over their program which had just finished that season with a rather disappointing 2-10 season.

MacIntyre promptly guided the team to an even worse 1-12 record. His second year was better and they finished 5-7. But, the 2012 season was amazing and the Spartans surprised with a 10-2 finish. The Colorado Buffaloes came after him when previous coach Jon Embree took the Buffaloes to a 4-21 record in 2 seasons with a Colorado all time worse 1-11 in his last year.

MacIntyre led the team to a 4-8 record his first season, which was an improvement over the previous staff. But, then the Buffaloes fell off in his second season to 2-10.

 

Last year, the Buffaloes didn’t finish much better at 4-9.  However, the team had a different feel than the previous seasons. They lost their opening game by 8 points. Then, they lost to Arizona by 7, UCLA by 4, USC by 3 and Utah by 6. All of those schools were bowl teams.

Last year, head coach MacIntyre brought in former South Florida head coach Jim Leavitt as his new Defensive Coordinator. He had little talent to work with, but he has improved the players that he had. Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie is actually one of the nation’s best.

Jim Leavitt is extremely experienced and he will have the Colorado defense playing to their maximum skill level.

 

On the offensive side of the ball, MacIntyre brought in former Colorado player Darrin Chiaverini as Co-Offensive Coordinator with Brian Lindgren. Like several other schools, Colorado has gone to a

more up tempo offense. So far, it’s working really well with 44 points in their opening game against rival Colorado State and then 56 in their second game against Idaho State.

That will come to an end this next weekend because they face the mighty 5th ranked Michigan Wolverines this weekend.

Colorado is not quite there yet, but they are fun to watch and they are slowly getting better.
Colorado won’t win their conference, but I think they go to a bowl game this year and they will put up a fight in most games.
