Why to Like North Carolina State in 2017

The Wolfpack of North Carolina State fell a little short in 2016 finishing 7-6 on year. However, they finished strong with a win over rival North Carolina after the Tar Heels were probably the favorite to win the ACC Coastal last season. Then, the Wolfpack played Vanderbilt in the Independence Bowl and crushed them, 41-17.

North Carolina State lost a close game to East Carolina early, then they should have beaten national champions Clemson later on if they had had a Field Goal Kicker.

Louisville crushed them, then they lost by 7 to Boston College. The Wolfpack always plays Florida State tough, and they lost by 4 points to the Seminoles. Their last loss was to an improved Miami, to

end the season with 6 losses.

But, they have the makings of a good team in 2017.

Boise State transfer Quarterback Ryan Finley is back and this should be his junior season. Last year, Finley threw for just over 3,000 yards and 18 Touchdowns. He threw 8 picks, with 2 each against Clemson, Louisville and Boston College all in a row. He was inconsistent to say the least and the Pack finished the season strong, but Finley is going to have to perform more evenly to take the next step.

Behind Finley is the exciting Jalan McClendon. At 6-5, 215, McClendon has the running ability from the Quarterback position to excite fans. But, his passing is plain awful at times. He threw only 1 Touchdown pass against 4 Interceptions. He scored a couple of Touchdowns with his feet, but he is going to have to improve dramatically with his passing, if he is going to replace Finley.

They return 8 starters on Offense with the biggest loss being Running Back Matthew Dayes who had over 1,100 rushing yards last season. Nyheim Hines and Dakwa Nichols played little last season, but should be at the top of the pecking order.

Receivers Stephen Louis and Kelvin Harmon both return, with 82 receptions between them.

Plus, the Offensive Line returns 4 starters if Will Richardson returns at Right Tackle.

But, the real reason I like the North Carolina State offense in 2017 is H-Back Jaylon Samuels. Jay Sam

Samuels is a weapon for the Wolfpack whether as a receiver, or as a runner, but especially on the goal line. Samuels came in as a short Tight End at 5-11, 240. But, the more they adapted his role, he lost weight to gain a little more speed and is now about 5-11, 225.

The other real reason I like the Wolfpack for 2017 is the four seniors along the defensive front. Led by Defensive End Bradley Chubb, this bunch is salty and hard to run on. Nose Tackle BJ Hill, Defensive Tackle Justin Jones and Defensive End Kentavius Street are all seniors with plenty of experience and talent. Surprisingly, none of them declared for the NFL after last season and

particularly Chubb and maybe Hill. Ask the Clemson Tigers about these guys, but they were not invincible as they were rendered almost meaningless against the Louisville Cardinals and Heisman winner Lamar Jackson.

Chubb is the best of the bunch and he was second on the team in total tackles as a sophomore 2 years ago. Last season he sacked the Quarterback 10 times with 22 tackles for loss. He had another 7 Quarterback hurries and caused 3 fumbles to prove himself as one of the top Defensive Ends in the country at 6-4, 275. He is not easily blocked.

Overall, the Wolfpack return 9 starters from one of the nation’s best run defenses. Their pass defense was a little lacking, but they also play in a conference that can throw the football.

Eight out of ten of their top tacklers are back and this looks like a defense that will play a lot of people tough.

North Carolina State has done very little in football in recent years, but the talent and experience is there for them to be a threat in the ACC for 2017.

Don’t overlook them.
