Colorado’s Steven Montez Leads his Buffs over the Ducks

Watching Colorado’s Spring Game in 2016, they said that Steven Montez was the Quarterback of the future for the Buffaloes.

He was not impressive at all in the Spring.

Montez was a 3 star dual threat Quarterback prospect from Del Valle High School in El Paso, Texas. He was very lightly recruited and supposedly he only had offers from nearby UTEP and New Mexico State. The Air Force Academy also offered as well as Colorado.

Obviously, he chose Colorado and he redshirted his first season there.

Quarterback Sefo Liufau was supposed to be injured this season, but he was able to return by the

opening game where he proceeded to tear into in-state rival Colorado State, 44-7. He completed 23 out of 33 passing attempts for 318 yards and a Touchdown.

Idaho State was up next for the Buffs and Liufau only threw 18 passes, but he completed 15 of them for 204 yards and a couple of Touchdowns. The Buffaloes steamrolled Idaho State, 56-7. Redshirt

freshman Montez got some quality playing time against Idaho State and completed 6 out of 10 passes for 117 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

Heading into their third game in Ann Arbor, Michigan the Buffaloes had a tall task against the 5th ranked Wolverines.

Nobody gave them much of a chance, but Colorado coaches and players didn’t seem too worried about it.

They came out ready to play and jumped all over the more talented Wolverines

They were holding their own with Michigan until Liufau got injured and redshirt freshman Steven Montez entered the game.

It wasn’t all the young Quarterback’s fault because he was harassed constantly by the suddenly overpowering Michigan Defensive Line. Montez attempted 7 passes and completed 0. He completed zero, zilch, nothing, naught, nada.

Michigan  took over the game completely at that point and won 45-28.

Quarterback Sefo Liufau, an experienced senior, was ruled out of the Oregon game. He was there and suited up, but he couldn’t go.

If Montez was going to play against Oregon like he did against Michigan, then this game was going to get ugly really fast because the Ducks can always score some points.

But, strange things can happen in football.

Against Michigan, the Offensive Line was playing great until Liufau went down. Seems they may

have lacked confidence in Steven Montez.

They came out ready to play against Oregon, that and the Ducks have never been known for great defense.

Montez was on fire from the opening kickoff. He completed 23 out of 33 passes for 333 yards and 3 Touchdowns. He threw 2 Interceptions, but those were later in the game when the Ducks were trying to come back.

Showing great athletic ability, the 6-5, 225 Montez, ran the ball 21 times for 135 yards and another score.

Maybe this isn’t the same Oregon Ducks program as in recent seasons, but still a Colorado win over the Ducks is still impressive for that program. This was a school that needed this win badly and they got the 41-38 win in remarkable style.

Head coach Mike MacIntyre cried at the end and hugged his son, Wide Receiver Jay MacIntyre,

before congratulating everyone else.

Steven Montez did not impress me much in the Colorado Spring Game, but he impresses me now. He showed a lot of heart and grit in leading his team to a victory over the favored Oregon Ducks and especially in Autzen Stadium where they are hard to beat, generally.

Colorado needs 3 more wins to qualify for a bowl game and this team shows enough heart to get it done. Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie is about as good as anyone in the country and will be drafted fairly early in the NFL Draft. But, other than him, they are not going to remind anyone of Alabama. They play pretty tough and their Offensive Line has improved dramatically.

This is a fun team to watch and Steven Montez is definitely their future at Quarterback.
