Shaquem Griffin UCF Linebacker

I was too thin in high school.

So was Clay Matthews. His father was his high school coach and he wouldn’t even play his son because he was too small.

What was your excuse?

Shaquem Griffin is missing his left hand. Do you think he made an excuse?

As a senior last season on unbeaten Central Florida’s magical run, Griffin was third on the team in

total tackles from his linebacker position. He had 13 and a 1/2 tackles for loss as well as 7 quarterback sacks. On top of the quarterback sacks, Griffin had another 9 quarterback hurries. He forced 2 fumbles and he broke up 3 passes.

But, his most impressive stats of all involved his right hand and his left arm. He had a pass interception which he returned 22 yards. He also had a fumble recovery that he returned 20 yards for a touchdown.

Shaquem has a twin brother named Shaquill that was drafted last season by the Seattle Seahawks in the 3rd round. But, Shaquem didn’t need his brother to garner attention, he did that all on his own.

After the Knights incredible 13-0 season, Shaquem was invited to the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Shaquem Griffin put on a show.

While the talk was of Oklahoma left tackle Orlando Brown doing a miserable 14 reps on the 225 bench press and running a 5.85 40 yard dash, there was Griffin.

After measuring at 6-0 3/8 and 227 pounds, Shaquem Griffin benched 225 an impressive 20 times. Twin brother Shaquill ran a 4.38 40 yard dash, and Shaquem ran a 4.38 40 yard dash. But, Shaquille is 6-0, 193 and plays cornerback, Shaquem weighs in at 227 pounds and plays linebacker.

The twins grew up in St Petersburg, Florida and were recruited to UCF by a different regime. But, head coach George O’Leary resigned in 2015 when the team went 0-12. Shaquill was a starter on

those teams, but Shaquim was a back up safety.

It was when Scott Frost took over as head coach at UCF that Shaquem Griffin really began to excel. During the 2016 season, Griffin was second on the team in tackles, with 11 and a 1/2 sacks and 20 tackles for losses.

Then, this past season, with more of the same.

Shaquem Griffin is an inspirational guy with a heart of gold. Some NFL team will probably take Griffin and he will more than likely make the team and help them take it to another level. Some guys are just winners and will take no injury, or handicap, as an excuse to achieve what they are capable of.

I wish I had known about Shaquem Griffin when I was younger.

No excuses.
