Dee Delaney Miami’s New Cornerback

When Forrest Gump was running near his home in Greenbow, Alabama, he was actually running in Beaufort, South Carolina. Greenbow was a fictional town on the Alabama coast, but Beaufort is the real deal.

Beaufort is known for it’s scenic beauty and it may be the perfect setting to illustrate what a Southern coastal town should look like, with it’s Live Oak trees and the Spanish Moss hanging gracefully from their massive branches. Beaufort As I write this, I can almost see Forrest and his best girl, Jenny, sitting in the tree talking their young lives away.

It’s a beautiful area with it’s lighthouses and it’s old Southern homes.

It’s a small town, but there are other small towns nearby and the military influence of Parris Island just a short drive away.

It’s also an area that has produced a few football players over the years. If you have read this blog

before, you just knew that I would get to football eventually.

Outside of football, actor Tom Berrenger is from the area. He is known for many roles, but maybe none better than the bad sergeant in the excellent Vietnam movie, Platoon.

Heavyweight boxing champion Joe Frazier was born and raised in Beaufort before moving to Philadelphia who claims him as their own.

Football players from here include Florida State’s fantastic Fullback Greg Jones. At 6-1, 250, Jones was obviously big, but he was also really fast for his size running a 10.7 100 meters in high school in Beaufort. He played 11 seasons in the NFL, but didn’t carry the ball much at that level, strangely. At Florida State he ran for over 2,500 yards.

First round draft pick Ashley Lelie, James Saxon and Devin Taylor. At Clemson, Defensive Tackle Nyles Pinckney redshirted this past year, but he was one of the highest rated recruits in the nation and supposedly he looked really good in practice. He will be nationally known soon.

The Citadel All American Cornerback Dee Delaney is also from the Beaufort area. He obviously was not heavily recruited out of high school and chose to play in nearby Charleston at The Citadel. He just might be one of the best players to ever play at the school as The Citadel.

He helped them with 6 Interceptions last season from his corner spot and he picked off 13 passes during his playing days.

The Citadel won the Southern Conference for the second year in a row and won 10 games this year.

Dee Delaney graduated in May and he could have come out like so many others this past year and

entered the NFL Draft.

But, I think Delaney is really smart and he is doing the right thing. At The Citadel, he may or may not, have been drafted. He has transferred to Miami for his senior season as a graduate transfer and he is projected as a starter for the Hurricanes.

This is a revitalized Miami program since Mark Richt took over. Not only is their recruiting now off the charts like in the old days, but the program will start to come around possibly as early as this season. This could be that breakthrough year for them.

For Delaney to start for the Hurricanes at Cornerback and to play against the likes of Florida State, and other ACC schools would be a huge boost for his standing with NFL teams.

The Canes lost both starters at Cornerback last year. Malek Young did start 4 games last year and should take one of the spots. Dee Delaney is already penciled in as the other starter. But, the job won’t just be given to him.

The Hurricanes brought in some talent in the last recruiting class at Corner. His biggest competitor could be Junior College transfer Jhavonte Dean. It would be a mistake to underestimate the 4 star Dean from Blinn Junior College but originally from Homestead, Florida. Dean was considered the 2nd best Junior College Cornerback and he had committed to Alabama at one point. He could be problems for Delaney.

They also brought in Trajan Bandy from Miami who was also a 4 star recruit.

If Delaney plays well this year, look for him to move up the draft boards this season. Quarterback, pass rushers, Left Tackles and Cornerbacks are probably the most popular positions and the ones that usually get drafted sooner.

You have to admire Dee Delaney’s courage and his work ethic.

Delaney should be a guy to keep an eye on this football season with his new and improved Hurricane buddies.
