ACC Quarterbacks 2017

Boston College:  Patrick Towles graduated from Kentucky and transferred to Boston College where he started in 2016. The Eagles are starting over at Quarterback again. Darius Wade backed up Tyler Murphy in 2014 and then was the starter in 2015 before being lost for the season. Last season, Wade backed up Towles. Redshirt freshman Anthony Brown is a legitimate contender for the starting spot and judging from the Eagles Spring Game, he could be a really good player.

John Fadule is also back and he has as much experience as anyone  on the team. Incoming recruits CJ Lewis from Cheshire, Connecticut and Tate Haynes from San Diego will be on the team by the summer and ready to fight for playing time. If Darius Wade can’t hold up, Anthony Brown looks like a good player.

Clemson: Losing Deshaun Watson was a huge blow to the defending national champion Clemson Tigers. Clemson recruiting has been off the charts in recent years under Dabo Swinney and there are plenty of options at Quarterback. Kelly Bryant is the early favorite to replace Watson. He’s been considered more of a runner than a passer, but he can throw the ball. He will go into the Fall practices as the leader, but he has not won the job yet.

Tucker Israel is a young redshirt sophomore that nobody gave a chance to play at Clemson, but he Zerrick Cooper was a much more highly recruited Quarterback out of Jonesboro, Georgia who redshirted a season ago. Cooper is 6-2, 205 and very much in the Quarterback race.

has impressed in practices. His passing broke records in Florida and the undersized 5-10, 180 Israel from Tampa, Florida has a huge heart so don’t ever count him out.

The Tigers have two true freshmen including the top Quarterback recruit in the land in Hunter Johnson from Brownsburg, Indiana. Johnson was an early enrollee who has been fantastic in practice and he has an outside shot at playing. The other freshman arrives in the summer, Chase Brice from talent rich Loganville, Georgia. You have to give Brice credit for signing with Clemson with so much talent in school and signing Hunter Johnson. The Tigers have a non binding commitment from the nation’s top Quarterback in the following class as well. Of course, he can always change his mind.

Duke: Daniel Jones returns for his sophomore season after taking over the job from the injured Thomas Sirk. Jones passed for 2,836 yards and 16 Touchdowns. Senior Parker Boehme is good and dependable with the ability to take over and lead the offense. He played a lot more in 2015 while backing up Sirk and has done well. Quentin Harris is also vying for playing time going into his redshirt sophomore season. Chris Katrenick was a 3 star recruit from Illinois with the 2017 recruiting class and he more than likely gets a redshirt season.

Florida State: After taking some serious beatings and some early struggles, redshirt sophomore Quarterback Deondre Francois really came on in 2016. Francois finished up with 3,350 yards passing and 20 Touchdowns. His running stats do not impress, but he is an outstanding runner. The Seminoles have 2 more years with Francois which might give them a legitimate shot at the playoffs. Backing Francois is somewhat frightening with only JJ Cosentino who has not looked great in game situations. There’s also true freshman Bailey Hockman, but he is straight out of high school and needs to learn the offense. Hockman was a 4 star recruit out of Powder Springs, Georgia. The Seminoles also signed 3 star prospect James Blackman from Belle Glades, Florida, but he has a lot

of filling out to do before being game ready.

Georgia Tech: Losing a good long term starter at Quarterback is never easy, and Justin Thomas was a special player. Matthew Jordan was his number one back up and should start the season off as the man. Last season, Jordan threw 9 passes, but obviously Tech is not a big passing team. He also ran for 243 yards and 6 Touchdowns. TaQuon Marshall also played a little backing up Justin Thomas, so he does have some game experience. Watch out for redshirt freshman Lucas Johnson here. He’s a very talented Quarterback from San Diego, California that can run and pass very well. Also, true freshman Tobias Oliver from Warner-Robins, Georgia was only a 2 star recruit. But, in high school, he passed and he also ran for over 3,000 yards each in his career. Stars don’t always matter when all is said and done and Paul Johnson finds smart kids to jason pass, mrun his offense.

Louisville: Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson is back for his junior season. The 2016 season was amazing for Jackson, especially early on and he passed for 3,543 yards and 30 Touchdowns. Jackson also ran for 1,571 yards and 21 Touchdowns which is probably what won the Heisman for him. However, after all of his success, he did slump late in the season and the Cardinals lost their last 3 games. Back up Kyle Bolin has transferred to Rutgers where he likely starts, but the Cardinals have another outstanding prospect coming up in redshirt freshman Jawon Pass. He was a highly recruited 4 star from Columbus, Georgia who should inherit the Quarterback job after Jackson declares for the NFL after this season.

Miami: When Brad Kaaya declared for the NFL, it created a huge battle to replace him. Malik Rosier was Kaaya’s back up and he’s a very eager young man that wants to play badly. I don’t know him personally, but I was very impressed with his attitude on the sidelines interacting with Kaaya the past couple of years. Rosier is the only Quarterback on the roster with game experience. He has not been officially named the starter yet, but I feel confident he will be. Evan Shirreffs will probably back up Rosier if he doesn’t beat him out. Jack Allison was thought to be a serious contender, but when he came out 3rd in the runnings, he hit the road. That left the door open for incoming freshman N’Kosi Perry who was a 4 star recruit and the 3rd rated Dual Threat Quarterback in the country from Ocala, Florida. There’s also walk-on Vincent Testaverde Jr and true freshman Cade Weldon. Obviously, Vincent’s father was the Miami Heisman winner and Cade’s was a great Florida State Casey Weldon

I think the job is Rosier’s.

North Carolina: Mitchell Trubisky only started at North Carolina a season before leaving for the NFL and becoming the 2nd pick in the entire draft. The loss of Trubisky attracted LSU grad transfer Brandon Harris4 Grad Transfers

Harris should be more suited to the Tar Heels offense and he has a chance to be good when he arrives in the summer. He will have to beat out last year’s back up, Texan Nathan Elliott. Sophomore to be elliott threw 9 passes last season completing 8. Harris has a strong arm, but has had accuracy problems and is a strong runner and he should win the job. The Tar Heels also have redshirt freshmen Chaz Surratt and Logan Byrd. Surratt had an incredible high school career with over 16,000 total yards and Byrd was one of those tough Warner-Robins guys and one of the best players in Georgia.

North Carolina State: The Wolfpack has some really good talent at Quarterback and it starts with Boise State transfer Ryan Finley. The tall, thin Finley aired the ball out last season throwing for 3,055 yards and 18 Touchdowns. Junior Jalan McClendon is very athletic and 6-5, 215. He can run, but his passing is erratic. Dylan Parham is a redshirt freshman from Raleigh who is also very tall and rangy. He signed with the Wolfpack with the 2016 class and hopefully has a handle on the offense by now. The 2017 class brought in yet another tall, rangy Quarterback that could be the best of them all in Matt McKay who is also from Raleigh. McKay is a true Dual Threat Quarterback that threw for about 2,000 yards as a senior and ran for about 1,000 yards. He may redshirt, but when given his opportunity he may be fun to watch.

Pittsburgh: Tennessee transfer Nate Peterman was a good fit at Pittsburgh and now the Panthers have former USC Quarterback Max Browne. Beaten out by Sam Darnold, Browne graduated and hit the road and who can blame him. In their bowl game lass last season, when Peterman went down, Ben DiNucci took his place. But, that was his only real game action of the season as a redshirt freshman. Cincinnati Moeller’s Thomas McVittie is a specimen at 6-5, 235 and he redshirted last season. Kenny Pickett is a New Jersey native and a member of the 2017 recruiting class. He is a dual threat, but unless he is surprisingly dominating he will likely redshirt this season. Browne has the most experience of the group, even if it  was with a different team and system. Browne was once the number one Quarterback recruit in the country coming out of the state of Washington and he likely wins the job.

Syracuse: If Eric Dungey could stay healthy, he might have a really good season in 2017 with Syracuse coach Dino Babers’ offense. Last season, Dungey threw for 2,679 yards before he was Zach Mahoney was a walk-on and has played and played well when Dungey has been injured.

knocked out for the season in their 9th game against Clemson.

In their 2016 recruiting class, the Orange signed Rex Culpepper from Plant High School in Tampa, Florida. He is the son of former Florida Gator All American Brad Culpepper and long time NFL star. Culpepper redshirted a year ago. 4 star Tommy Devito from Ramsey, New Jersey signed with the Orange in their most recent class. Dungey is only a junior, but Devito could be the Quarterback of the future.

Virginia: Kurt Benkert took over the starting role for the Cavaliers last season in route to a 2-10 record after hiring long time BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall. They lost most of their depth to graduation, but they have redshirt freshmen Sonny Abramson and De’Vante Cross. They just signed Lindell Stone and brought in Missouri transfer Marvin Zander.  As the only one on the roster with any experience and returning for his senior season, Benkert will start again.

Virginia Tech: New head coach Justin Fuente signed Junior College Quarterback Jerod Evans as one of his first recruits and it paid off big time. However, after an outstanding season, Evans announced for the NFL Draft and then he wasn’t even picked. He has nobody on campus who has even taken a snap in a college game. Redshirt freshman Josh Jackson probably knows the offense better than any of the candidates because he’s been in the system longest. But, he has to beat out this year’s Junior College transfer AJ Bush and true freshman Herndon Hooker. The Hokies were very fortunate with Evans, but it doesn’t appear that Bush is on the same level. Jackson should win the job at least early on, but Herndon Hooker probably has the most long term potential. Hokie QB

Wake Forest: The Deacons have maybe the best Quarterback situation in the entire conference. John Wolford is going into his senior season with 3 years of starting experience. He’s thrown for over 5,500 yards and he can run pretty well. He should be the starter all of the 2016 season. But, he will have competition yet again from Kendall Hinton who is the most mobile of the two. Most fans would prefer Hinton, but that’s the nature of the beast with the 2nd team Quarterback and fans. Returning Quarterback Kyle Kearns was recently booted from the team which leaves redshirt freshman Jamie Newman and incoming freshman Tayvon Bowers.
