Heisman Favorites October 2018

1. Tua Tagovailoa – Alabama: When Tagovailoa participated in his first spring game at Alabama, I said on one site that this guy was special. Some people laughed about that. Tua Tagovailoa will get the last laugh all the way to the national championship and the Heisman Trophy. Tagovailoa transformed a very good Alabama team into a great Alabama team. On the season, so far, Tua has thrown 18 touchdown passes without a single interception. He’s just an incredible player just as some of us thought he would be.

2. Kyler Murray – Oklahoma: Not since USC’s Matt Leinert and Reggie Bush won back to back Heisman’s has the same team won two in a row. But, Kyler Murray has the talent to do just that. Murray is listed as 5-10, 195, but that is a complete fabrication. He can’t be more than 5-8, 170. But, in spite of the lack of size, Murray has a rocket launcher attached to his shoulder. The kid can make any throw, but maybe the most impressive feature in Murray’s arsenal is his unbelievable quickness. After 6 games, Murray has thrown for 21 touchdowns and run for 6 more. This will be Murray’s one and only shot before he’s off to professional baseball.

3. Will Grier – West Virginia: Probably on the outside looking in, is a very talented player that

started his college career at Florida. The Gators were the wrong choice for many quarterbacks after Tim Tebow, but Grier is in the perfect system now. West Virginia is 5-0 and has an outside chance at a playoff spot with only Texas and Oklahoma as their top challengers for an unbeaten season and a Big 12 championship. A healthy Will Grier is their only legitimate shot at any kind of a championship which makes him a contender for the Heisman, in my book.

4. Jonathan Taylor – Wisconsin: The Badgers have been my most disappointing team of the year, so far, when they lost to Brigham Young in game 3. With 3 supposed 1st round draft picks returning in the offensive line, they should have been better. However, Jonathan Taylor has lived up to expectations. After 5 games, the 5-11, 220 speedster has run for over 200 yards in 2 separate games and has 849 yards rushing and 8 touchdowns.

5. Dwayne Haskins – Ohio State: I really believe that Haskins makes this a better Buckeye team than the ones in recent seasons. I’m not blaming JT Barrett for their problems, but proclaiming that Haskins is just a talented quarterback and makes this offense go. In 6 games, Haskins is working on 2,000 yards passing and 25 touchdowns. The Buckeyes were in dogfights with TCU and Penn State, but Haskins helped guide them through. With only tough games remaining with Michigan and Michigan State, plus maybe Purdue, the Buckeyes might have a shot at one of the 4 playoff spots and I believe they will perform better than last time.

Trace McSorley – Penn State: McSorley has not thrown for huge yardage this season, but there’s little doubt that he is the glue that holds the Nittany Lions together and he is a winner. Penn State has a 26-6 record with McSorley as the starter including a Big 10 championship. Penn State still has a shot at a one loss season and a good bowl game, or even a playoff spot.

7. Travis Etienne – Clemson: This is my crazy pick of the week, although when you look at him closely it may not seem like such a crazy pick after all. With 83 carries, Etienne has 761 yards rushing which equals a pretty incredible 9.17 yards per carry. In 6 games, he already has 11 touchdown runs and a lot of them came from a long way out. The 5-10, 200 Jennings, Louisiana native is a big play kind of a guy.

8. Jerry Jeudy – Alabama: These are my really long shot picks to win the Heisman. The last non quarterback, or running back to win it was Charles Woodson of Michigan back in 1997 and he was a cornerback/return man. The last wide receiver to win it was ESPN’s Desmond Howard in 1991. Jeudy has no shot, but man is he ever a beast. He only has 23 receptions after 6 games, but he’s averaging over 24 yards per catch. He’s a big time guy like you would expect at Alabama.

9. Greg Dortch – Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons are struggling, but Dortch is a star. Not only is an outstanding receiver, he’s also a punt returner with 2 returns for scores this year, so far. He’s got the same chance of winning the Heisman as I do winning the lottery and I don’t even play the lottery.

10. McKenzie Milton – UCF: My list begins and ends with Hawaiian quarterbacks. While not on the same level as Tua Tagovailoa, Milton can play. He helped his team to a memorable 13-0 record last season, two years removed from an 0-12 record. The biggest win was over a good Auburn team in the Peach Bowl where Milton was extremely impressive. So far this season, the Knights are off to a 5-0 record and more of the same from McKenzie Milton.

Milton is listed as only 5-11. 185. But, the kid can play.
