Ohio State Recruiting Class 2016

Quarterback:

The Buckeyes broke the hearts of the Maryland Terrapins by stealing their prized Quarterback recruit, Dwayne Haskins Jr. Only Jacob Eason, KJ Costello and Brandon Peters are rated higher on ESPN’s list of Pro Style passers. JT Barrett probably stays at Ohio State for only one more season and then the job will be open. Haskins could redshirt next season and compete for the job. Haskins is listed at 6-3, 205 and he looks like he could easily gain a few pounds and handle it easily enough. He’s got that arm that Offensive Coordinators crave. Maybe not as good as some of the other Quarterback recruits but it is strong enough and he can pass accurately on the run. He’s not going to make

Buckeye fans think of Braxton Miller when he takes off running, but he is dangerous with his feet as well. But, he’s more of a pocket guy and not a dual threat like JT Barrett.

Running Back:

Demario McCall is the 2nd rated Running Back in this recruiting class, but he is tiny at 5-9, 175. There are varying reports of his 40 times and none of those should ever be  trusted anyway. Hudl has him at 4.35 and ESPN at 4.55. Either way, McCall is as shifty as about anyone this side of Eric Metcalf. He is hard to tackle because he can cut on a dime and has great vision. The Buckeyes may not be able to use McCall as an every down back, but he could be really dangerous behind a solid Offensive Line. McCall could also play Cornerback.

I really love Antonio Williams from New London, North Carolina. With his high school’s Carolina blue uniforms and his #34 he reminded of current Tar Heel Running Back Elijah Hood. Williams is 6-0, 220 with really good speed which also reminds of Ezekiel Elliott. He is a deluxe power back that can run over people while having some good moves. He is the 9th rated Running Back in the nation and I would not be surprised at all if he plays as a freshman this season.

Wide Receiver:

The Buckeyes took some heavy losses at Wide Receiver and they’ll need some bodies to step up quickly here. In the 2016 class they signed  Austin Mack from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Mack is about 6-1, 210 with good speed. For his high school, he returned quite a few kicks and punts for scores. He also played Wide Receiver, Running Back and Defensive Back. I could see Mack at either Wide Receiver or Safety for the Buckeyes and size wise he might make a perfect Safety. Mack is rated as the 30th best Wide Receiver in the nation.

Binjimin Victor is a project. He is 6-4, 175 with average speed but is a 4 star recruit.

Tight End:

The Buckeyes lost starter Nick Vannett, but Marcus Baugh could be better long term.  Jake Hausmann is a 6-4, 240 Tight End from traditional powerhouse Cincinnati Moeller High School. Hausmann is a carbon copy of recent Buckeye Tight Ends like Nick Vannett except maybe a little better receiver. He is a really good blocker and could play early if necessary.

Throw the ball high and Luke Farrell, the 6-6, 245 of Perry, Ohio will go up and make the catch. Farrell is tough and will fight for every yard. He might remind a little bit of Rob Gronkowski with his ability to make the difficult catch. Farrell is also a crushing blocker much like some of the top Offensive Tackles. The Ohio State Buckeyes helped themselves out at Tight End very much.

Offensive Tackle:

Besides having one of the all tie great sports names, Michael Jordan is a really good Offensive Tackle. Jordan is rated as the 16th best Offensive Tackle in the nation, but he is possibly better than that. He is relentless when he locks up with a defender and just seems to want to bury them. He is 6-7. 305 and moves well laterally which makes him effective as a pass blocker. He could redshirt and then start for 3 years, or he might be ready to go immediately.

Malcolm Pridgeon is one of the best JUCO Tackles in the country and he should be able to help in a hurry. Pridgeon is also listed at 6-7 and around 300 and is ranked 3rd among Junior College Tackles. The Buckeyes lost both starting Offensive Tackles and they need some instant depth.

Offensive Guard and Center:

Tyler Gerald was the 6th rated OG in the nation and I really think he is better than that. From what I have seen of him, he is completely dominating and just drives people off of the ball before burying them. Gerald is huge for a high school player at 6-5, 315 and he looks like he could play right away.

Jack Wohlabaugh is rated as the 7th best Center prospect in the country. He plays Guard in high school and is 6-4, 280. He will need to bulk up slightly, but he has great feet and has nice quickness and athletic ability. He does drive people off the ball really well at the high school level.

Gavin Cupp is not rated very highly and is a 3 star prospect. Cupp is 6-4, 285 and a bit rough around the edges, but he has enormous potential.

Defensive End:

Some people think that little brother Nick Bosa is better than big brother Joey Bosa. Bosa is one of the 5 star recruits and is the top ranked Defensive End in the country. If you haven’t seen the younger Bosa played you have missed out. He is a beast. He is slightly smaller than Joey, but not enough to matter. Unless zombies take over the planet before next season, I don’t believe there’s any way they can keep Nick Bosa off the field.

We all know Bosa is going to be great, but Jonathon Cooper is a talent, too. He is listed at 6-3 or 6-4 and about 235. He is fast and athletic enough to play Linebacker, but he is an outstanding Defensive End with his explosiveness coming off the edge. Tackles aren’t quick enough to block him at the high school level.

Ohio State lost Joey Bosa to the NFL, but they have some good players returning at Defensive End especially Sam Hubbard and Tyquon Lewis.

Defensive Tackles:

The Buckeyes lost 3 Defensive Tackles and it’s definitely a need position in this class. They only signed one guy in Malik Barrow from IMG Academy in Tampa, Florida. He might even be a Defensive End and is listed at 6-2, 275. His listed 40 time is not good, but all Barrow needs is to be quick for about 10 yards and that he is. He is a good pass rusher and has a tremendous first step.

Linebacker:

Keandre Jones was the 3rd rated Outside Linebacker prospect in America and the Buckeyes stole him late from the Maryland Terrapins. This was a big loss for the Terrapins and a big win for the Buckeyes. Jones is just a beast. Not many are going to make the corner against Jones if he has contain with his great speed. He is a great tackler in the open field and a big hitter. With the Buckeyes’ losses at Linebacker, he may get a chance to compete for early playing time.

Tuf Borland is going to be a fan favorite in Columbus. He is well named and plenty tough. He is going to remind people of the Buckeye Linebackers like Chris Spielman, Tom Cousineau and those guys. He is a run stuffer and brings the wood, as they say, when he hits people. The Buckeyes have Raekwon McMillan back at Middle Linebacker and he is outstanding, but he should declare after next season for the NFL.

Cornerback:

Wayne Davis is a two way star from Virginia that is just a play maker. In high school, if he touched the ball he was likely to score. He is not rated very highly, but he made play after play on both sides of the ball. Good coverage skills, and good size make him a good looking prospect for the Buckeye secondary.

Another recruit out of Maryland is Kareem Felder from Baltimore. He’s a little on the smaller side, but he has the frame to fill out and he is a vicious hitter for his size. He’s got great speed and coverage ability. He might need a year or two to fill out a little but Felder is definitely a talent.

Athlete:

Ohio State signed quite a few guys that ESPN and other sources list in the Athlete category which only means they don’t know what position that these guys will end up at in college.

Jordan Fuller is one of those guys. He played Quarterback and Wide Receiver some in high school and at 6-2, 200 he could even fill out enough to play Linebacker. His speed is listed at 4.6 but he looks a bit faster than that.

Jahsen Wint is a tough inner city kid from Brooklyn that has the nickname of Show Time. Wint is a heavy, heavy hitter as a Safety prospect and he is good at Wide Receiver as well. Wint will bring some Brooklyn attitude to the field in Columbus.

A different kind of Athlete at 6-4, 225, Kierre Hawkins could play just about anywhere in college. He has the speed to play Wide Receiver, but could grow into Tight End status. He also played Outside Linebacker or Defensive End on Defense. He has great quickness for a guy his size and he played Running Back or a Wing Back at times on Offense. He kind of reminds me of the talented Charlie Woerner that signed with Georgia.

The Buckeyes stole a talent out of the state of Kentucky in Rodjay Burns. Whether he plays Wide Receiver or Defensive Back in college is up in the air, but I am sure the Buckeyes know already where they want him. He is a talent on both sides of the ball.

Malik Harrison was the Buckeyes lowest rated recruit. He was a high flying basketball player while playing Quarterback on the football team. He’s not the fastest guy, but he is anywhere from 6-3 to 6-6 and 215 to 225.

Kicker:

The Buckeyes decided to take a kicker with Sean Nuernberger going into his junior season. Drue Chrisman was the 7th rated Kicker in the country from Cincinnati.

The Buckeyes signed an outstanding class which helped them most at Quarterback, Running Back, Tight End, Offensive Line, the Defensive Line and Linebacker the most.

Nick Bosa is about as good as anyone in the country and so is Keandre Jones and Dwayne Haskins.
