Jarrett Stidham Auburn Quarterback

I love Sean White. He’s a competitor and gives his all on every play. He’s got so much heart and he plays hurt.

But, as hard as he plays, he’s just not going to be Jarrett Stidham. That’s not a knock on Sean White at all.

Stidham is just on another level.

In the Auburn Spring Game, Stidham looked sharp. However, that was against the second team

Auburn defense and not against the starters.

As a student at Stephenville High School, Stidham first committed to Texas Tech and head coach Kliff Kingsbury, AKA Coach Kool. But, Stidham switched his commitment to Baylor and signed there on the first Wednesday of February in 2015.

Due to an injury to the Baylor starter Seth Russell, Stidham was forced into action as a true freshman. That was all right, as he was the 2nd rated Dual Threat Quarterback in his 2015 class. In other words, Stidham was a gifted Quarterback. Some Quarterbacks aren’t ready to go as a true freshman no matter how highly they are rated.

Stidham threw for 1,265 yards and 12 Touchdowns with only 2 Interceptions. He connected on 75 out of 109 attempts for an excellent 68.9 percent. Most of his work came in three games and he threw for 419 yards and 3 Touchdowns. His only Interceptions came against the Big 12 champions Oklahoma. Stidham joined Seth Russell with the injured players after his third start.

After Baylor head coach Art Briles was fired, Stidham announced he was leaving Baylor. He spent the following season at nearby McLennon Community College before going through the recruiting process again.

He chose Auburn and enrolled early to go through Spring drills with the team.

Parting ways with his long time friend and Offensive Coordinator Rhett Lashlee, Auburn coach Gus Malzahn had to find a new guy. This must have been difficult for both Malzahn and Lashlee and usually when a move like this is made it’s to save your own skin while blaming the Coordinator. Lashlee landed on his feet at UConn and should be fine. Auburn should be fine, too, because of the addition of Jarrett Stidham, not a new Offensive Coordinator.

Some guys just look natural back in the pocket and Stidham is one of those guys. He throws a nice

deep ball, yet has touch on short passes as well. His mechanics look clean and crisp, and his feet look nearly flawless. He isn’t going to remind of Nick Marshall running the ball, but he is very athletic and he can run pretty well. Since he was once ranked as the second best Dual Threat Quarterback, it’s safe to assume that he will be able to run the zone read and the spread offense pretty easily.

He has already been elected a captain, as well, so this guy has natural leadership abilities.

It looks like the only battle at the Quarterback position is for the backup position.

After winning the SEC in his first season as the head coach at Auburn, Gus Malzahn has led the Tigers to 8-5, 7-6, 8-5 records and his job is on the line. 23-16 over three seasons at Auburn is just not going to get it done with Alabama playing in championship games nearly every season.

Jarrett Stidham just might be the guy to save Gus Malzahn and Auburn from mediocrity.
