So, Who Really Did Start at Quarterback?

SEC

West:

Alabama: This is some seriously good CIA type secrecy going on here.

After much talk of Alec Morris taking the lead, Jake Coker was the starter and Cooper Bateman a guy that we had heard nothing about all Spring and Summer was the first guy in off the bench late. Coker didn’t make many mistakes, but they were conservative.

Auburn: Jeremy Johnson started but was not impressive with 3 Interceptions while going 11 out of 21 for 137 yards.

Ole Miss: Chad Kelly started and looked good, but all the contenders played. Ryan Buchanan played next with DeVante Kincaide following. All three players looked okay, but playing Tennessee Martin can do that to a Quarterback. If the other Power 5 Conferences are so inferior and weak, why not just schedule those schools instead of FCS teams?

Mississippi State: Less hyped Dak Prescott completed 22 passes out of 38 attempts which totaled 237 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

Texas A%M: Kyle Allen started and then was benched but came back to be a star.

Arkansas: Brandon Allen was one of the more impressive Quarterbacks this weekend throwing for 308 yards and 4 Touchdowns.

LSU: Lightening cost us a chance to see the LSU Quarterbacks in action.

East:

Georgia: Grayson Lambert started and only threw 12 passes, but then he didn’t have to do much since the Bulldogs were playing Louisiana Monroe and they have Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and Keith Marshall. Sorry, racist SEC fans, but you also have Brandon Douglas. Back up Quarterback Brice Ramsey also got some playing time.

Tennessee – Joshua Dobbs looked as good as expected.

South Carolina – Connor Mitch did indeed get the start, but was not impressive and I would never rule out the back up with Steve Spurrier on the job.

Missouri – This will be really interesting. Maty Mauk has been a good Quarterback for the Tigers, but they signed a kid that I think can be a phenom in Drew Lock. Mauk was efficient, but Southeast Missouri is maybe one of the weaker teams an SEC team will play, so how much can you tell about this game. Lock threw 10 passes and completed 6 for 138 yards and a Touchdown.

Kentucky – Patrick Towles was effective, but maybe they could use his skills at Linebacker because the defense could not stop anyone this Saturday.

Vanderbilt – Starter Johnny McCrary struggled and so did the Commodores as they lost to Western Kentucky.

Florida – The Gators surprised me and named Treon Harris the starter a the last moment. Harris looked good, but so did Will Grier. But, hey, Jim McElwain’s dog could play Quarterback for Florida, or so he told us once.

Big 10:

East:

Ohio State – Cardale Jones started and the game is going on while I am writing this.

Michigan – Rudock made the start and it wasn’t pretty, but that was somewhat understandable.

Michigan State – Connor Cook is Connor Cook, but he had a very average opening game. Both Michigan State and Cook will need to pick it up greatly when Oregon comes to town.

Penn State – Hackenberg and the entire Penn State team struggled against Temple. It was actually worse than struggling, it was horrible. Hackenberg threw for 103 yards from 11 completions. In defense of his efforts, he was under heavy duress all day long and was sacked 10 times.

Maryland – Perry Hills got his first start and was respectable, but like so many teams this past week he didn’t need to be because of the level of competition.

Rutgers – Hayden Rettig go the start and was good, but Chris Laviano came in during the second half and was 4 for 4 and 3 Touchdowns. I would suspect that Laviano will start next week.

Indiana – Nate Sudfeld is an NFL prospect and was sensational for the Hoosiers.

West:

Wisconsin – Joel Stave struggled, but threw a couple of Touchdown passes. I team that runs the ball well and can’t throw well is playing right into the hands of an Alabama.

Minnesota – The big Mitch Leidner did fairly well against what is supposed to be one of the top teams in the country in TCU. He completed 19 passes for 195 yards and a score.

Nebraska – Tommy Armstrong was really good and threw for over 300 yards and 3 Touchdowns. The entire Cornhusker team played well and unfortunately lost on a Hail Mary pass.

Iowa – CJ Beathard played well enough, but again the competition was iffy at best.

Northwestern – Freshman Clayton Thorson did just enough to win and his best play was a Touchdown run by Thorson. The defense won this game for the Wildcats over Stanford.

Purdue – Austin Appleby was decent at times against Marshall but threw 4 Interceptions which cost his team the game.

Illinois – Maybe firing a coach right before the season started was not as bad as I expected as the Illini actually did fairly well. However, they were playing Kent State. Wes Lunt threw for 4 Touchdowns.

Pac 12:

North:

Oregon – Vernon Adams did get the start and threw for 246 yards and 2 Touchdowns.

Stanford – Kevin Hogan looked like a freshman against Northwestern and the Cardinal got beat.

Washington – Husky coach did start true freshman Jake Browning after all. The Huskies lost to Boise State in Boise on that hideous blue playing field. Browning wasn’t horrible and you can read about it here if interested: Jake Browning

Goff threw for over 300 yards and the back up Quarterback, Chase Forrest, got plenty of playing time.  Don’t overlook this California team in the future. Sonny Dykes is a great coach.

Washington State – Luke Falk started for the Cougars but the entire team was horrible in a loss to Portland State.

Oregon State – Seth Collins got the start, but Marcus Maryion played, too. Neither was really special in a Beaver win over an inferior team.
South:

USC – The game was never in doubt and Cody Kessler was as expected and threw for 236 yards and 4 Touchdowns.

UCLA – True freshman Josh Rosen was spectacular in his debut: Josh Rosen  or  First start

Arizona State – Mike Bercovici and his Arizona State Sun Devils had their struggles.

Arizona – Anu Solomon threw for 229 yards and 4 Touchdowns, which is pretty standard for him and the Wildcats.

Utah – Travis Wilson has never gotten a lot of respect, but had a decent night against Michigan. Most of his success came with his feet in leading the Utes to a win.

Colorado – Sefo Liufau had another rough game and this time against an opponent they should have beaten.

ACC

Atlantic:

Florida State – Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson got off to a slow start, but he did finish strong with 302 yards passing and 4 Touchdowns. Most importantly to FSU fans, no Interceptions.

Clemson – Watson was almost flawless in the opening game.  The exciting thing for Clemson and their fans is the development of back up Nick Schuessler who has received some publicity for

improvement. Schuessler completed 9 out of 11 passes for 98 yards later in the game.

Louisville – The Cardinal played Auburn tough before losing and Reggie Bonafan struggled before being replaced by freshman Lamar Jackson.

North Carolina State – Jacoby Brissett did not throw for huge numbers but hit a remarkable 21 out of 23 passes.

Boston College – Darrius Wade was solid in his first start, but they played poor competition so the jury is still out.

Wake Forest – John Wolford was really good throwing for 323 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

Syracuse – Tough break for Terrel Hunt who is out for the year with an injury, Eric Dungey replaced him and they won easily against a bad team. Syracuse was once a national powerhouse.

Coastal:

Georgia Tech – Justin Thomas was his usual self in a blowout of Alcorn State.

Duke – Thomas Sirk was impressive in his first start throwing for 289 yards and 2 Touchdowns and running for 68 yards.

Virginia Tech – Michael Brewer is playing presently and was injured early in the 3rd quarter.  Brendan Motley was forced into playing and the game is still going on.

Miami – Brad Kaaya was what was expected after his freshman season in 2014. He threw for 173 yards and a couple of scores in an easy win.

North Carolina – Marquise Williams was good early on, but struggled late. He will bounce back.

Pittsburgh – Chad Voytik didn’t do a lot in his first game, but he did not need to with the Pitt running game going gang busters.

Virginia – Matt Johns looked good at times against the Bruins. He completed 21 passes for 238 yards, but his Cavaliers were just over matched against UCLA.

Big 12:

TCU – Trevone Boykin threw for 246 yards and ran for 92.

Baylor – Okay, whoever Baylor plays is going to have good numbers  and especially with their schedule. Seth Russell is the latest and he threw for 376 yards and 5 Touchdowns.

Oklahoma – I sung the praises of Baker Mayfield from last Spring and he is proving me right. Mayfield threw for almost 400 yards and 3 Touchdowns.

Oklahoma State – Mason Rudolph is still young but a talented player.  The Cowboys struggled against Central Michigan.

Texas – Not a good night at all for Texas or Swoopes at Notre Dame. Awful night, for the Horns on both sides of the ball.

Kansas State – Joe Hubener played the entire way for the Wildcats, but played very conservatively.

Texas Tech – Patrick Mahones took over the starting job and had a huge night passing for 425 yards and 4 Touchdowns.

Iowa State – Sam Richardson played well in an easy win over Northern Iowa.

Kansas – The Jayhawks are in terrible shape and Montell Cozart started at Quarterback and was pretty good, but they are just so bad that they lost to South Dakota State.
