SEC Week 2 Results

I’m an old school guy. I am ready for some different teams to play for the SEC Championship. I’d love to see Ole Miss win the West just this one time and for Tennessee or Georgia to win the SEC East. Georgia may actually win their division, but Ole Miss and Tennessee or long shots at best.

This week was cream puff week for the SEC teams.

Announcer for the Crimson Tide game said all 5 RBs for Alabama could go elsewhere and start. Huh? Ever heard of some guy named Todd Gurley? Melvin Gordon at Wisconsin averages over 8 yards a carry. They don’t all start at Auburn, LSU or Arkansas either. Or, they don’t all start at Michigan State.alabama crimson tide

Sometimes I wish commentators would just stop saying ridiculous things. But, Alabama does have a lot of talent for sure. They have a whole lot more talent than Florida Atlantic and it clearly showed.

Amari Cooper already has 25 receptions for 319 yards and 1 TD after 2 games.

Alabama jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back. Blake Sims was 12 out of 14 passing for 228 yards and 2 TDs.

His back up, Jacob Coker, threw for 202 yards on 15 completions in 24 attempts. It was his first real action and he looked more than capable. Alabama rushed for 190 yards but the game was never close and there were not enough carries to go around. TJ Yeldon had 43 yards on 7 carries and Derrick Henry had 5 carries for 23 yards. Will either of these guys or Kenyan Drake become frustrated with lack of playing time is the question. You know, since every Running Back on the Alabama roster can start anywhere in the country.

I am a big fan of this year’s Kentucky team. Mark Stoops had a rough season in 2013 in his first year at Kentucky, but they are much improved so far this season.

Steve Towles is a talented young QB and they may be a force in the near future. They are fun to watch which every SEC team can’t say. Towles has an arm and he can move for a tall kid.

They haven’t played anybody yet but they beat up Tennessee Martin 59-14 and Ohio 20-3. This coming week they travel down to Florida to take on the Gators and that is a game to look forward to.

Florida finally got to play their first game and blew out Eastern Michigan 65-0. Jeff Driskel and the offense looked really good and so did the defense but how much can you really tell playing against these teams. Eastern Michigan gave up 45 points a game last season.

Test comes against Kentucky this week which almost sounds odd because of the kind of teams that the Wildcats have fielded lately. florida gator helmet

Driskel, in his first game back, threw for 248 yards on 31 completions and 1 TD. True freshman Treon Harris from the famous Harris family and Booker T Washington High School in Miami threw 2 passes and completed both and they each went for TDs of 79 and 78 yards.

Florida rushed for 259 yards in this slaughter.

Ole Miss couldn’t run the ball against Boise and I had to wonder how that will effect them later this season against better teams. But, they put up 180 yards against Vanderbilt and won 41-3. Bo Wallace threw for 320 yards on 23 completions in 30 attempts.

Evan Engram their Tight End/H Back was the top receiver and caught t passes for 112 yards. The Ole Miss defense pretty much shut down Vanderbilt.

I will say this for Vanderbilt. They are really bad, but Right Guard Spencer Pulley from Germantown, Tennessee gave Robert Nkemdiche fits on Saturday. Ole Miss roughed up Vanderbilt pretty badly but Pulley did really well against Nkemdiche. He looked to be an All Conference kind of player.

Vanderbilt overall looks pretty awful and they miss James Franklin really badly. It’s going to be a long season for them.

Mississippi State had their hands full with the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The Bulldogs won, but it was only 47-34 and the UAB Blazers had 548 total yards. The so called Psycho Defense of Mississippi State must have had their meds recently because they played fairly normally.

Dak Prescott threw for 211 yards and 4 TDs and then ran for an additional 111 and another TD in a pretty good day for him. Bulldog’s Josh Robinson rushed for 124 yards on 20 carries.

Missouri is 2-0 but they have not looked overly impressive and especially on defense. Maty Mauk threw for 325 yards and 5 TDs but also had 2 interceptions as the Tigers beat Toledo 49-24. Their defense gave up over 400 yards and Kareem Hunt for Toledo had 148 yards rushing on 15 carries and 3 TDs.

Tennessee also had a bit of a dog fight with Arkansas State. The Vols are super young across the board but are 2-0 after a 34-19 win. Justin Worley threw for 247 and 2 TDs and true freshman and budding star Jalen Hurd ran for 83 yards and another TD.tenn flag

The Vols travel to Norman, Oklahoma next week to take on the Sooners that are ranked #4. Should be a huge test for this young team to see how they hold up.

I am angry with myself for ranking South Carolina so highly this year. I should have seen this coming with the losses that they took from last year’s team. I only had them at 14 instead of the 9 like the national polls had, so even though I was not alone in missing on them it still stings.

The Gamecocks gave up 321 yards passing this week against East Carolina after giving up 511 yards last week.

Mike Davis had bruised ribs last week and couldn’t play much but bounced back a little bit this week with 101 yards on 18 carries. Dylan Thompson is a decent QB but he’s not Connor Shaw.

The Gamecocks beat East Carolina at home, 33-23. The Gamecocks gave up 453 total yards this week. The offense had 441 yards.

The Gamecocks had one of my best Offensive Lines coming in. Both lines have been a disappointment and I wonder how the so-called Ole Ball Coach feels about Jadeveon Clowney now?

The Arkansas Razorbacks looked outstanding offensively in the first half against Auburn. Then, they had a lightening delay and looked awful in the second half.

This week, they played Nicholls State at home and scored long touchdowns the first two times they touched the ball. ark2

This game was ugly from the opening whistle as the Hogs ran for 495 total yards and passed for

another 189 to total up 684 yards. In all fairness, Arkansas is pretty good in the running game but Nicholls State was pretty helpless.

I love the Arkansas Offensive Line and Jonathon Williams had 4 carries for 143 yards and 1 TD at an eye popping 35.8 yards per carry. Alex Collins had 13 carries for 131 yards and 3 TDs.

Fun day for the Razorbacks beating up on Nicholls State 73-7.

Auburn crushed San Jose State 59-13. The Tigers had 359 yards on the ground and only 135 through the air.

Auburn just has too many weapons on offense to utilize them all in every game. Duke Williams had 4 catches for 60 yards and Cameron Artis-Payne rushed for 112 yards, Nick Marshall for 101, and Corey Grant for 89. The Tiger defense only gave up 65 yards rushing.

Playing weaker opponents can diminish the work your players can get at times.

LSU was in the same boat as most other SEC teams. They beat up Sam Houston State 56-0 at home.

Leonard Fournette had a much better night against a weaker team than he did against Wisconsin. Fournette had 92 yards rushing on 13 carries and 1 TD. On his first college touchdown, he made everyone upset by doing the Heisman pose.

Anthony Jennings only completed 7 passes but 3 of them were TDs. Wide Receiver Travin Dural continued to be a big star catching 3 passes for 140 yards and 3 TDs. One of the touchdowns was 94 yards.

The Tiger defense crushed Sam Houston State and held them to 206 yards total.

Texas A&M is scary good. I do realize they played Lamar and Lamar is not a top team or even close, but this team is frightening.

73-3 beat down of anybody is convincing. Aggies versus Alabama and Auburn are going to be some shootouts.

Kenny Hill only threw for 283 yards this time but true freshman Kyle Allen came in and also had 122 yards passing.

This Aggie team might be really hard to beat.

The SEC did play mostly patsies this week but they still went 12-1 and the only loss was between 2 SEC teams.
