Casey Weldon backed up Chip Ferguson and Peter Tom Willis in 1988 for the Florida State Seminoles and head coach Bobby Bowden. The Seminoles finished 11-1 that season during their dynasty period. FSU Dynasty

Florida State finished 10-2 the following season with Peter Tom Willis at Quarterback and Casey Weldon backing him up. Like te 1988 season, the 1989 Seminoles finished the season ranked 3rd in the final polls.

Weldon was a junior in 1990, but Florida State had a promising young Quarterback in Brad Johnson. Weldon was the starter, but Johnson got a lot of playing time while the Seminoles again finished 10-2 and 5th ranked in the country.

Brad Johnson was pushing, but Casey Weldon held him off and he had a great senior season in 1991.

Weldon threw for 2,527 yards and 22 Touchdowns while finishing runner up in the Heisman voting. Even though Weldon had a big season, that ever elusive mythical national championship continued to be beyond Bobby Bowden’s grasp as the Seminoles finished 11-2 and ranked 4th.

They lost by one point to the hated Hurricanes of Miami and then by 5 points to the equally hated

Gators of Florida.
Brad Johnson never became that star at Florida State that everyone expected, but he did have that prototypical size that NFL scouts dream of and he had a successful NFL career.

Charlie Ward took over the starting Quarterback role in 1992 and then led the Seminoles to their first ever national title in 1993. Plus, Ward won the Heisman Trophy. Bobby Bowden would go on to win another national title in 1999 with another Heisman Trophy winner in Chris Weinke. Quarterback Weinke did not win the Heisman until the 2000 season, but he was their leader in the unbeaten 1999 season.

By all accounts, Casey Weldon was a Seminole through and through. During his days in Tallahassee, the Seminoles went 1-3 against chief rival Miami. Some of those losses were pretty painful.

It must be almost as painful for his son, Cade Weldon, to commit to play Quarterback for the Miami Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes beat the top ranked Florida State Seminoles 31-0 in 1988 and Miami had the inside

In 1989, the Seminoles did manage to beat Miami, but they had already lost their first 2 games to Southern Miss and Clemson.

They lost painfully to Miami in both the 1990 and 1991 seasons and that had to hurt Casey Weldon.

Maybe all is forgiven, but more likely the reason Weldon committed to Miami is the fact that Florida State did not even recruit the 3 star son of a Seminole great.

Cade Weldon is about 6-3, 200 according to both ESPN and MaxPreps.

He also threw for 3,135 yards and 19 Touchdowns as a senior at Tampa, Florida’s Thomas Jefferson High School.

He ran for 368 yards and another score while leading his high school team to a 7-4 season in 2016.

 

It’s yet to be determined if Miami Quarterback Brad Kaaya is returning for his senior season, or declaring for the NFL, But, if he leaves, either junior to be Malik Rosier or hotshot 4 star recruit from a  year ago, Jack Allison will be the favorites to replace him. Watching Rosier in the past and his behavior on the sideline during the Miami games, I would think that Malik is the favorite. He is really focused on the games and helping Kaaya and the team with plays and the direction of the offense.

It’s probably going to be hard for Casey Weldon to pull for the Hurricanes, but blood is always thicker than water. If his son earns playing time at Miami, Mr Weldon will more than likely come around.

At the moment, it might be a little tough for him to swallow.
