Pittsburgh vs Penn State: It’s Back On

After calling it quits in the 2000 season, the rivalry between Penn State and Pittsburgh is back for the 2016 season.

People in that part of the world are already talking about that game and they have been for a while. It’s about the domination of the state of Pennsylvania and Penn State owns a 50-42-4 edge in the series.

I’ve written about the excellent Pittsburgh Panther teams of the past: Pittsburgh Panther Glory

That was back in the day when the Pittsburgh Steelers had to share some of their good times with the Panthers.

They won the national title back in 1976 and awesome speedy Running Back Tony Dorsett won the

sought after Heisman Trophy. They also beat their main rival, Penn State, that season 24-7.

Johnny Majors was their head coach until he left to coach the Tennessee Volunteers following the national championship.

Even after he was gone, the Panthers had stars like Dan Marino, Hugh Green, Mark May, Jimbo Covert, Bill Fralic, Chris Doleman and so many others.

Penn State is one of America’s storied programs. To many people, Penn State is Linebacker U because of all the top notch Linebackers they have produced over the years. But, they have had great players at every position and they won national championships in 1982 and 1986. They didn’t win championships in 1968, 1969, 1973 and 1994 when they ended their season undefeated.

Some of these schools most important games happened back when Pittsburgh was loaded with talent. In the 1982 season, 2nd ranked Penn State beat 5th ranked Pittsburgh 19-10 and then Penn State won the national championship when they beat Georgia and Herschel Walker in the Sugar Bowl.

It was future 1st round draft picks Pittsburgh’s Dan Marino vs Penn State’s Todd Blackledge. When people asked back then, Marino said he was better than Blackledge and he was correct.

The two schools quit playing years ago supposedly because of Joe Paterno. I’m not sure how truthful that statement is, but for whatever reason this series stopped and a lot of fans would love to see the game happen again.

September 10th 2016 these two schools renew the old rivalry in the city of Pittsburgh.

Hopefully, this could be a really good game, too. Penn State returns a lot of starters outside of Quarterback. Pittsburgh also returns quite a few players.

This could be a story of the Running Backs. Penn State’s Saquon Barkley vs Pittsburgh’s James Conner and Qadree Ollison.

Pittsburgh has the better Offensive Line, but Penn State likely has the better defense. Second year Pittsburgh coach vs third year Penn State coach James Franklin.

I am looking forward to this game.
