Nick Chubb Georgia Running Back

What is it about this school and freshmen Running Backs?

The greatest Running Back in the history of Georgia football and maybe the greatest ever in college football is Herschel Walker.

Walker was a true freshman in 1980 and ran for 1,616 yards and took his team from a 6-5 record the year before he arrived to national champions in his first season.

Before the arrival of Todd Gurley in 2012, the Georgia Bulldogs have had several freshmen that were sensational.

In 2007, Knowshon Moreno came out of Middletown, New Jersey and ran for 1,334 yards. Moreno is still active in the NFL and playing for the Miami Dolphins.

Rodney Hampton ran for 890 yards in 1987. Hampton went on to success in the NFL after being drafted in the 1st round by the New York Giants.

Thomas Brown ran for 875 yards in 2004. After playing in the NFL for a few seasons, Brown is now the Running Backs coach at Wisconsin where he is coaching a pretty decent player up there named Melvin Gordon.

Isiah Crowell ran for 850 yards in 2011 before getting into some trouble and leaving Georgia and then going on to the Cleveland Browns.

There were several others along the way with Garrison Hearst running for over 700 yards and Tim Worley with over 600 yards.

In 2012, Todd Gurley came on the scene and split time with another true freshman Running Back Keith Marshall and they set the world on fire. Gurley rushed for 1,385 yards and 17 Touchdowns during his freshman season and sidekick Keith Marshall had 759 yards and another 8 Touchdowns. Marshall was a 5 star recruit out of Raleigh, North Carolina and considered the second best Running back recruit in the country.

Gurley was still a sought after 4 star recruit, but he was considered an athlete and not a top Running Back was the 10th ranked player in his home state of North Carolina.

Gurley proved everyone wrong and outplayed the higher ranked Marshall from day one and is considered by most to be the top Running Back in the entire country. Gurley was the leading Heisman candidate until the recent suspension for signing autographs for money.

Johnny Manziel, the so called Johnny Football did basically the same thing but was suspended for half of a game. Gurley was the Heisman frontrunner but now that is ruined as he has been out indefinitely.

Both Gurley and Marshall struggled with injuries last season and Marshall is still out due to an injury.

In spite of missing several games, Todd Gurley still managed to rush for 989 yards in the 2013 college football season.

The Bulldogs recruited 2 outstanding Running Backs in the 2014 recruiting class. Sony Michel was a 4 star Running Back from Plantation, Florida rated as the 2nd best prospect at his position in the nation behind Leonard Fournette. Michel rushed for 223 yards early on this season but went down with an injury.

The other great true freshman Running Back is Nick Chubb. Chubb was a 4 star recruit and considered the 7th best in the country out of Cedartown, Georgia.

I don’t know why people are surprised with the talent and success of Nick Chubb. He ran for 5411 yards and scored 79 Touchdowns during his junior and senior seasonĀ  at Cedartown, Georgia. At 5-10, 230, and with impressive speed, the only thing surprising about Nick Chubb is how soon he was forced into duty.

Chubb also ran a 10.69 100 meters in a high school track meet.

Todd Gurley will definitely be gone after this season and the Georgia Running Back position should be well stocked with Nick Chubb, Sony Michel and maybe Keith Marshall returning.
Auburn fans will disagree, but Georgia has produced about as many quality Running Backs over the years as anyone.
