Jake Browning Washington Quarterback

Almost lost in all of the attention on true freshman Quarterback Josh Rosen of UCLA was another true freshman Quarterback about 1,100 miles to the North. Like Rosen, Jake Browning came into his first season in college football and started from day one.

For the Washington Huskies, Browning started immediately. But, unlike Rosen, his results were mixed. Browning did not have any really, really bad games. But, he had some very average results such as in a loss to the Cal Golden Bears.

In spite of some tough moments, Browning still managed to throw for 2,955 yards and 16

Touchdowns. He completed 233 passes out of 369 attempts. The negative was 10 Interceptions, but I have little doubt that will get worked out as he and his team gets better.

Browning was a 4 star recruit and was ranked by ESPN as the 5th best drop back passer in the country. Ranked ahead of him were Blake Barnett who signed with Alabama. Josh Rosen was rated 2nd, and the 3rd ranked John Kolar of Norman, Oklahoma signed with Oklahoma State. Rated in the 4th position was Brady White who signed with the Sun Devils of Arizona State.

The ESPN list looks pretty accurate because 4 out of the top 10 started as true freshmen.

In high school, Browning was listed at 6-2, 185, otherwise, he might have been rated closer to the very best on the list.

His high school statistics were beyond incredible. He put up some unbelievable passing numbers.  Browning threw for an eye popping 16,775 yards in three years on the varsity. He attempted 1,708 total passes while in high school completing 1,191. Maybe his most inspiring and mind blowing stat is the 229 Touchdown passes in three seasons including 91 as a senior.

Compared to all of those Touchdown passes, he only threw 40 Interceptions.

Stats may not be everything, but Jake Browning is kind of a big deal.

Browning had a good freshman season, but he will continue to improve with an improved and more experienced Offensive Line. Left Tackle Trey Adams is one of the up and coming Offensive Line

talents in the country. It’s too bad the East Coast will never notice.

The Huskies did lose Browning’s top target when Jaydon Mickens used up his eligibility. But, they return Dante Pettis and Braydon Lenius. Plus, they return blue burner John Ross who missed all of 2015 because he was injured.

True freshman Myles Gaskin was one of the top young Running Backs in the country and he returns along with another super young talent in Chico McClatcher. Gaskin ran for over 1,300 yards as a freshman and brings an elite level of speed to the position.

Last season, Washington had the best defense in the Pac 12, but in 2016 they may have an offense to match and that could spell trouble for Pac 12 opponents.
