College Football Week 3 Preview

Thursday’s night game has Houston traveling to Provo, Utah to take on the Brigham Young Cougars. Texas fans don’t want to see BYU again anytime soon. BYU is 2-0 after stomping Texas yet again, 41-7, this past weekend. Houston has not been good since Kevin Sumlin left and this game probably will not be interesting. But, expect the University of Houston to at least put up as much of a fight as Texas did.byu

The Cougars have entered some top 25 lists and are a team to watch this season. If Taysom Hill had Texas on the schedule for every game he would win the Heisman.

On Friday night Baylor goes to Buffalo to bully their next victim. Baylor QB Bryce Petty is out, new QB Seth Russell is in. Different QB, exact same results.

Expect an early blowout and then 3rd string QB Chris Johnson to come in and also have the same results.

Saturday is not going to be the best of football days, but still college football is always better than weddings.

The Georgia Bulldogs travel to South Carolina to play the Gamecocks. Not sure what to think about the Gamecocks right now, they looked bad in their opening game and somewhat better but not very good in their second against East Carolina.todd gurley 2

I am thinking the Bulldogs take care of them fairly easily but my track record wasn’t good last week. I am expecting Todd Gurley to run wild because the Gamecock Defensive Line has looked pretty below average.

Tennessee is undefeated and takes on OU in Norman, Oklahoma. UT is really, really young and has a tremendous group of freshmen but that may not cut it against a top team like Oklahoma. OU probably needs to go undefeated to make the playoffs, so look for them to continue to be motivated. Tennessee, while fun to watch, is probably nowhere close to being ready for a top team like Oklahoma.

I figure the Sooners will destroy the Vols, but I am hoping Tennessee keeps it somewhat close for their sake and their confidence later on in SEC play.

OU has been very explosive so far this season.

UCLA and Texas meet in Arlington at Jerry World. This was a game I looked forward to from the off season but neither team is looking all that great at this time. UCLA is undefeated but has struggled with mediocre opponents.brett hundley 2

Texas just looked like the mediocre opponent against BYU only not even mediocre but really, really awful. Even with defensive minded Charlie Strong they still can’t stop a running QB and their offense is beyond pitiful. Their own QB situation is about as bad as anyone’s in the country.

In 1997, UCLA came to Austin to play Texas and beat the Longhorns 66-3. This probably won’t be another Route 66 but it could be ugly.

The wolves are howling in Austin already. It’s pretty sad how badly Mack Brown let that program slip in recent years unless you are a Longhorn hater.

The University of Central Florida is at Missouri in the Tiger’s biggest test yet. UCF looked much better in the second half in Ireland after they found their QB and Missouri defense has not looked that great. This could be an exciting and close game. UCF and Head Coach George O’Leary struggled in the first half against Penn State after losing super QB Blake Bortles, but after they installed Justin Holman they looked much, much better.

They were off last week to prepare for Missouri and to lick their wounds and get over jet lag. I have not been impressed with Missouri so far and I am going out on a limb and picking 0-1 UCF in an upset win. George O’Leary is a great coach and if he had been allowed to stay at Notre Dame, I truly believe the Irish would be national contenders every season.maty mauk

Louisville is at Virginia. The Cavaliers looked much better than expected against the UCLA Bruins even though they lost. Louisville looks better than I thought after losing Coach Charlie Strong. What was I expecting since Bobby Petrino is an excellent football coach.

I am going with Louisville but Virginia is looking impressive.

West Virginia is at Maryland and both look improved. Moving to the Big 10 may have been a wise move by the Terrapins. West Virginia gave mighty Alabama all kinds of problems last week.

This game is a toss up and could be a great game to watch. West Virginia is 1-1 and Maryland 2-0.

Arkansas is at Texas Tech. Neither is ranked but I am thinking Arkansas is very much improved even at 1-1. Tech is 2-0 but had a tough time in El Paso last week. Can the Red Raiders stop the Razorback running game? We will see. I would not be surprised at all to see Arkansas come out of Lubbock with a much needed win for their program. The Hogs have several great Running Backs, an improved QB and a couple of very good Tight Ends and Receivers.ark

UTSA takes on Oklahoma State. I am liking what I see out of UTSA and I love to watch Tyreek Hill from Oklahoma State. JW Walsh is out indefinitely at QB for the Cowboys but his back up looked really good for a guy that hasn’t played football for about 5 years. Daxx Garman had to come off the bench when Walsh went down last week and he was impressive.

UTSA played great defense against Arizona last week. Cowboys should win but it might be a better game than previously expected.

Illinois at Washington could be a shootout. Neither team showed much defense last week. Illinois has Oklahoma State transfer Wes Lunt lit it up last week against Western Kentucky throwing for 456 yards and 3 TDs. Washington barely held off Eastern Washington last week and won 59-52. This game could have some offensive fireworks and the Big 10 really needs to save face here.

Also in the Big 10, 2-0 Penn State takes on 2-0 Big 10 newcomer Rutgers in New Jersey. Jersey is prime Penn State recruiting grounds, so a win here will have more meaning than just a 3-0 start for James Franklin’s first season. It could make a statement to Jersey recruits that Penn State is still the place to go. Franklin is one of the best coaches in the country but the Nittany Lions are still short on Scholarships and lack depth. Christian Hackenberg is having a sensational early season and may be over 1000 yards already after playing this weekend.christian hackenburg 2

Nevada at 2-0 whipped Pac 12 member Washington State last week, can they whip Arizona this week? This game is late so if you live in the Central Time Zone or Eastern set up your recorder. I tend to think that the Wildcats of Arizona is another type of big cat than the Cougars of Washington State and should do better than they did last week against UTSA. Arizona Wildcat QB Anu Soloman could have a much better night this week. Or, Nevada might just beat down another Pac 12 team.

Kentucky goes to the swamp and tries to beat the Gators. Both are undefeated and superior to last year’s teams. I am anxious to see how Kentucky’s QB Patrick Towles does against a real defense and I am anxious to see how Florida QB Jeff Driskel does.

I am taking Florida here because of their defense.

This is not the greatest of football weekends but there are enough good games to keep a junkie like me entertained.
